It seems like the game is going to include more than 10 Ancient Civilizations, but how do you think they will be incorporated into the gameplay?

Will they be available to play alongside Medieval Civilizations or will they have their own separate category to play in?

I think it’s going to be up converting AoE (where the DE is essentially dead) to the AoE II DE standard, in its own game mode.

I also think it’s going to include at least Western Roman Empire as a playable AoE II civ.

It would be a super popular (meaning download $$$) civ even if not good.

We already have the Goths and Huns (and to some extent Celts) so it’s not entirely out of scope.

The thing is that AoE1 Civs share a lot of bonuses with AoE2 civs and they lack unique upgrades or unique units.

I just don’t see them reworking from scratch 16 new civs for one DLC.

So, to me it makes more sense that AoE1 content will be separated from AoE2, though both assets to be present in editor for custom maps and whatnot.

Really curious to finally hear any news.

And to hear what this DLC will mean for aoE1 DE, will it make it obsolete or will it be different enough?

Seeing how Gotha get BBC, I would expect at least Egypt to utilize gunpowder, because why not?

It will be a separate section for AoE 1 civs.

I’m hoping they will also add one new Western Roman Empire civ for aoe2 (late Roman Empire different from the aoe1 civ)

It will be all the AoE1 civs added as their own separate game mode.

But now they get to utilize improvements that AoE2/AoE2 DE made; like gates, queuing tasks, unique icons, “transparent” farms etc etc.

It will be implemented exactly like they said: it’s a separate game in the same engine.

I think, like the other “River Valley” civilizations, Egypt will have a villager-related eco bonus of some kind, and a chariot unit.

Rome will be a naval civ with an open tech tree, lackluster cavalry, and some sort of building-related gimmick.

Can’t remember what the other civ will be.

If you’re going to have celts knocking around and can get to imp, there’s no reason Rome,Greece,Egypt and Carthage can’t get fed into the game.

That being said, fix the fecking game and stop farming dollary doos forgotten empires, you bunch of goofballs

It’s going to be a separate game mode, and the Romans also come to the normal AoE2: DE.

I believe the DLC will be more in lines of an option (either in-game or when launching the AoE2 client) to “toggle” between the Return to Rome DLC and the base game where the AoE1 civilizations will be kept separate from the AoE2 civilizations.

It would not make sense to directly add any of the antiquity civs like Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians, etc.

    into the medieval era civilizations.

Plus, the game engine limits up to 48 civilizations.

Not sure how familiar you are with AoE 2 HD Edition but that game has two separate datasets with two “unique” tech trees – one for Age of Kings and Conquerors only with 1.0c Balance (i.e.

all civs but Goths only having one Unique Technology, Cartography must be researched in the market) and one for HD’s DLCs.

I highly assume Return of Rome will handle things similar, so AoE 1’s civs are as separate dataset with their own tech tree.
