One thing I would like to stress is that a calmer early game is necessary when the maps are randomly generated and covered in fog of war.

In Starcraft2, you already know where the opponent is, what kind of wall offs you can do and such.

In aoe2, you need to figure all that out once the game has started.

That is one reason why I don’t like the faster to action game mode Empire Wars, which skips the early game.

I want my choice of strategy to be based on other than just guesswork.

I still do think that the early game could be sped up a bit but not that much.

First of all: Something you have to keep in mind in AoE 2 is that the in-game timer runs faster than real time.

The game is usually played at 1.7 speed (or 2.0 in the Deathmatch mode).

The standard mode in AoE 2 is called “Random Map” which starts in Dark Age with 3 villagers and one scout.

In most build orders, sheep run out at about 8-9 minutes in-game, which is the usual time where you click up to Feudal Age.

This is about 5 minutes real time, so you’ve got slightly more seconds to switch your strategy.

Yeah this LEL stuff is definitely not respresentetive of the game.

The earliest kind of attacks you can do are “Drushes”, which is usually making 3 Militia in Dark Age and sending them with your starting scout to the opponent to disrupt their economy.

Most people though do Feudal Rushes with Scouts or Archers, so the “action” with the first attacks start at about 11 minutes in-game (= ~6:30 minutes in real time).

There is btw also a separate mode called “Empire Wars” where you start in the 2nd Age (Feudal Age) with an already running economy, so basically immediate action.
