How Accurate is Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition’s 1v1 Ranked ELO System?

This weekend I played my first twelve 1v1 ranked games of Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition and checked the Elo rating of each opponent after the game.

Most of the players I faced had a rating between 100 and 1000, with the highest being 875 and the lowest 764.

I was surprised to see how wide the skill gap was between these players.

It seemed like the Elo rating wasn’t a good indicator of the skill level or the difference between a rating of 760 and 860 was massive.

Some opponents resigned as soon as I sent my feudal archers into their town at 14:30, while another had no military and only one Town Center by 25:00 and resigned when I sent five Knights to their woodline.

Three others tower rushed me at 11:00, followed by knights/bows and a forward castle upon upticking at around 18:00.

Another Scout rushed me and then also forward castled.

On Arena, I was out-boomed and lost to a single push by the opponent at 40:00 with 40 Arbalests, Halberdiers and siege, followed by 60 Elite Eagles.

It was a huge jump in difficulty.

Keep in mind elo fluctuates, so maybe that 760 player had a really strong day yesterday and he climbed from 650, while the 870 player had a bad day yesterday and dropped from 970.

even if thats not the case, in lower elos performance is very inconsistent.

you can just catch a player on a very good/bad game.

A 100 elo difference is huge at that level, i fluctuate between 1050 and 1150, when i match a 1k player i can just run him over and vice versa

I’d argue players definetly have different ELOs depending on the map.My arena account is 100 ELO above my “Arbia random only” account.

And even then, I’m a much better scouts player than archer player, so when I get an archer civ like Ethiopians, I might perform worse than I would with a different civ.

Because there are so many variables (civ, map, matchup), it’s hard to mold them into a single number hence it’s inevitably not spot on.

On lower ELO (<1200) that matters even more than on higher levels.

    There are several factors here:

    1.

Yes, a 100 Elo difference is very big.

    Not _huge_ perhaps, but big.
    2.

Number of games alone might not mean much, when the number of _recent_ games is not that high.

I have friends who skipped half a year.

After coming back, they played way below their previous level.
    3.

The lower the level, the more inconsistent the player.

Sometimes we are lucky with execution, sometimes everything turns to a big chaos fest and we might not even notice it and just carry on.
    4.

The difference between having 0 military at 25:00 and tower rushing at 11:00 is not necessarily big at all.

It’s just a matter of decision.

The 0 military player probably put an equivalent effort into eco to the effort in aggression of the tower rusher.

It’s just that the tower rush itself simply pays off more.

I’ve found the 1v1 elo system is pretty good (TG slightly different story) once you’ve played your 10 placement games.

As someone else said the biggest thing at lower elo is consistency.

I’d say up to 1100-1200 you’ll see massive swings based on the map or civ match up.

People don’t use standard builds, idle their Tc’s, are super passive etc.

so each game can vary widely leading a fair amount of stomps.

These huge swings become less and less frequent as you and your opponents climb in skill.

That said I still have the occasional titanic at 15/16xx but happens much less often.

Speaking as a 850 elo who worked his way up from 300.

We have good days and bad days.

I’ve been up to 1k and down to 700 depending on the maps and if I go random civ.

If I pick Bulgarians all the time it’s 1k no problem anything elo ots a drop.

First 10-15 ranked games are kinda weird, because your elo fluctuates too hard with victories or defeats.

After that, it becomes very accurate, and you’ll feel that you’re facing someone with your same skills.

Here you have a video that explains elo system for AoE.
