Has the Age of Empires 2 Community Become More Toxic in the Past Year or So?

My experience with DE has been since its release and I recall that the majority of games ended with players saying ggwp, with the occasional griefer present.

However, nowadays I find that I can’t play more than three games without encountering someone who refuses to resign, spewing toxic insults or even making threats.

Recently, one of my friends had an opponent tell him to commit suicide.

Do you agree that the community has become more toxic?

Unfortunately this is what happens when the game experiences a rebound in popularity.

Previously the game was played by a fairly fanatic player base that was thrilled to still be playing a cherished game 15 years after release.

A greater portion of the player base as a result was “just happy to be here” in a way.

Now we have dedicated servers, additional content, and a properly functioning ELO system that people get hot and bothered about instead of appreciating it as a tool for better matchmaking.

If I had to guess, the population of this sub has tripled since I joined and I think the attitude on here has changed too.

There are a lot of desires/demands of the game developers (which are not inherently bad since they can provide feedback for improvement) whereas in the old days we had what we had and had to be happy with it.

It is really elo dependent imo.

I bounce up tot 1150+ and down to 1k from time to time, and around the 1k mark there is a lot more toxicity: insults after losing, saying bg instead of gg, calling you a noob, vill hiding/afk, fake gg, or saying gg?

    when they think they’re winning.

More obvious smurfs at this level also.

When my elo is at its highest, ppl gg when they lose and are overall pleasant.

They also don’t throw a fit if they get lamed, although I have had some early resigns for it, which is another way to show you’re salty I suppose.

There is a big drop off in toxicity at around 1200 I would say

Can you define refuse to resign?

At lower ELOs I think that’s more common, not always because they “refuse to resign” but because they don’t always know that their finished.

Back when I was new to pvp multiplayer, there were one or two times that someone got salty at me for “refusing to resign” when it legitimately felt like I still had a chance to win.

I was behind but not crippled, and they weren’t pushing the advantage that they apparently had.

Sometimes people expect a resignation without “securing” it, and at lower ELOs or experience it can be hard to tell when you should resign (I’ve also had people resign when I felt like they shouldn’t have because I knew my position wasn’t actually as strong as it seemed to them).

Now if it’s random people purposely hiding off in the corner or something and refusing after their base has been leveled…

Then yeah, that’s refusing to resign and those people should feel bad. (Although once after someone was being an ahole in chat, I did force him to hunt me down completely, because f that guy.

But I did also tell him it was because he was being toxic – I had said nothing else to him in chat other than the standard hello at the start)

    Seems to be inevitable.

DayZ was mostly cool people then the battle royale crowd invaded as the game had a resurgence.

    AoE2 suffers the same fate.

Guess that comes with more people.

My main 2 games have both had this happen now.

Smaller communities tend to be more welcoming communities.

Large ones just catch whatever shit lands in the net.

I’m around 1100 elo and i can’t remember when i had the last toxic opponent.

In tgs it’s happend more often at the moment.

But i had the feeling that it was more toxic around 900-1000 elo.

I didn’t know you need to say gg until heard it from t90.

I just resigned without a word, when the defeat was inevitable (enemy advancing, and i had no chance to rebuild my army).

That might have been perceived as being salty by my opponents, but it wasn’t

    I never text anything.

Don’t know if you would consider that toxic.

Yes, it is far more toxic.

Insults, refusing to resign and hiding villagers across the maps, and the worst thing an aoe2 player can make: unpausing.

Never care about irrational and untamed peoples behavior.

Decide what your priorities in life is, and go for them no matter what others think of it.

Your preferences are only yours, no one can change your biology.

With this in mind, why do you care about the lost souls who try to slowly pull you down into darkness?
