Gujaras are an Unrecognized Alternative to the Popular Gunpowder Nomad Strategy

I’m seeing a lot of advanced Nomad matches lately that involve gunpowder monk pushes, and I almost never see Gujaras being used to counter them.

Gujaras can be concealed in docks, and they can be very effective in thwarting gunpowder monk rushes.

Shwarma riders can also be effective in countering these rushes.

I think they are very good and maybe a bit underlooked but the sheep thing isn’t the reason why.

Tbh I normally don’t have more than 2 or 3 sheep.

All of them are scouting and I don’t have a mill early on.

That being said in tramgames it can be different.

If you FC you tend to build a mill after a few fishing Ships case you might loose water.

Allies can send you leftover sheep as well.

And two free bushes are also quite good for safe food if you don’t find any at the start.

And shrivamshas truly disabled the ranged units from your enemies.

And you can kill enemies quickly with the siege elephants.

I was playing in a 3v3 nomad tourney(with a civ draft) and I think we won every game I played gujaras which isn’t a lange amount of games and where not all top civs are played simultaneously but they sometimes singlehandedly won us games.

That’s another reason to remove the dodging mechanism of Shrivamshas against bullets.

Nomad is a map where, if fortunate, you can find 20 sheep.

With Fish eco (remember, they can garrison their fishing ships), sheep generating food and hunt and Berries all over the place, I’m surprised there are not many complaints about their performance on Nomad starts.

Gurjaras already do great on Arabia and fine on Arena.

Do they need to overperform on every map?

You never see gurjaras because they aren’t a good nomad civ.

You don’t make a mill early so their eco is just generic.

Then garrison fishing ships is nice if you fight on water but as usually on nomad it’s UU civ vs fast feudal civ you’re not in a defensive position.

And the most common UU btw is conqs which still a good vs shrivamshas because they can hit and run even if they are slower.

I mean, it’s definitely an interesting strategy.

I think the problem with getting Gurjaras to work on nomad is that you usually wouldn’t invest in a mill on nomad, but you almost always invest in an early mill with Gurjaras.

Maybe you could delay it for the dock, but then you’re not really at any advantage early on.

You will want to scout with any herdables you find, so you might delay doing an early mill anyway, and then it’s up and ready for storage by the time your sheep-scouts all return.

How do you upgrade to elite shwarma riders?

I️ couldn’t figure it out the other day..

had basically every upgrade unlocked and still didn’t see an option to upgrade to elite.

Is there a specific tech to unlock before I️ can get them to elite?
