I’m curious about the typical skill level in Age of Empires 2.

As an 1100 ELO player who selects civilizations at random, I’m wondering if I’m an average player.

Despite there being no clear answer on what an average ELO is, I’d like to hear your opinion on the matter.

1000 elo is the average for ranked players, so you are slightly above average compared to the ranked playerbase.

However, a LOT of the playerbase doesn’t play ranked at all, and most of them are very likely worse than an average ranked player. (I would love to find statistics on exactly how many regular unranked players there are.

I suspect there are quite a few.)

Outside of that….. “Good” is entirely subjective.

    Define it however you want.

Hera feels like he isn’t good when he loses to viper in grand finals of an S-tier tournament. 600 elo players feel like they are good when they beat their 400 elo friends.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

You can see how you for into the 1v1 and team elo distributions here: https://ratings.aoe2.se/?team_one=&team_two=

Currently 1100 puts you at the 65% percentile, so you’re just outside the top third of the ranked 1v1 ladder

Well literally speaking 1000 elo is average since that is the tip of the bell curve.

Kinda the point of the elo system.

Basically anything less than 2.3k ELO is noob.

Below 1.8k you are absolute trash

    Just kidding obv !!!!

1100 I would say is right around average.

I know in theory 1000 is average, but there are many losing players who drop down to low ELOs and never play and thereby artificially raise everyone else’s ELO.

you are above average if thats the question.

IT depends on what you consider good.

1250 or so TG elo maybe 1200 1v1 to me is “good” ie you typically don’t see terrible late-timed FC or imp play on closed maps, feudal military production is consistent and quality, you see flashes of excellent meta ie great timing maa rush, players have the ability to respond to trushes, castle drops etc and don’t quit.

Below that it starts becoming a complete crap shoot and can get really frustrating to play TG

Everyone better than me is a pro.

Everyone worse than me is a noob.

    I am the average player.

The goal is the largest group of players is 1000 Elo.

But in reality the the middle is more like 950. 1100 is pretty good.

I’d say the jump from 1000 to 1100 is a pretty big barrier to hop.

    1100 Eli’s is top 1500 USA. 1300 is top 500 US.

And by the time you get to 1600 you’d be a top 100 player US.

    Slims down fast!

Above average and far from good. 1100 still have a lot of major weakness.

For me someone good is around 1800-2000 where everyone knows the mechanics and macro, strategy defines who wins

With 1000 Elo you’re officially in the Top 50 % of all players.
