Galleys Set Ablaze

There seems to be a general consensus in this subreddit that maintaining water balance is not an issue.

However, I have a different opinion when it comes to the Feudal Age.

I find it ridiculous that people only rely on fire galleys, as opposed to regular galleys, which should be the norm in my opinion.

It baffles me that the fire galley, a unit unique to the Byzantines, has become the standard for all civilizations.

    This issue bothers me greatly.

Would anyone else happen to share this view, particularly in hybrid maps?

Do not conflate historic realism and game balance.

    The second trumps the first

    >People on this sub seem to agree that water balance is fine

Now I’ve seen people make some boneheaded statements on this sub, but this one is one I have literally NEVER heard said.

People mostly make galleys on water maps in feudal age unless landings are involved.

Hybrid maps where there is land + water play or very small water spaces like 4 lakes or kawasan are very different to full water maps

Water balance is terrible in AoE2.

There isn’t even a functional counter system and only a few civs are viable on water maps.

I don’t even dislike playing water really like many people do, but in this game it’s not very well balanced.

Yeah seeing that one fire ship demolish your entire fishing fleet within mere minutes is not a good taste.

I envy those fire galleys that could be built during castle age back then, which are actually an answer to the feudal galleys that have moderate raiding capability.

It’s not a come and go now, whoever kicks feudal faster will have an immense control over fishing economy, especially in maps like nomad this matters a lot than you think.

Galleys can work just fine against fire ships in feudal if you are time is good.

It’s just micro intensive which obviously explains why people in the 800s don’t make them…

I don’t think it would make sense to change anything to make balance in sub 1000 Elo better.

Of course this doesen’t apply to Four Lakes etc.

because you need a large number of galleys for them to dominate fires.

It’s sort of the same as archers vs knights.

One is good in low numbers the other when you mass.

Would it make sense to remove knights just to make crossbows stronger?

Also fire ships work much better against fire galleys than ranged galleys…

    So it’s a soft counter.

    Fire galleys standard in feudal?

If anything, they could use a buff in feudal and castle.

Fast fires are in a good state, but the earlier versions could use a bit of speed so they can at least catch up to galleys and not be kited to infinity.

The fire gally is the knight of the sea, click it and forget it…

    mostly

the gally requires micro or else it can get eaten by fire galleys…

they are the archer of the sea
