In my current situation of being a 200 ELO point below 900, I have been pondering what is required to become an established 900 ELO player.
I have come up with a list of my own, which may not be accurate, but I thought I would share it anyway.
To reach 900 ELO from 700, I believe I must:
1.
Always remember to build villagers while raiding
2.Avoid playing nomad
3.Overcome my nerves and execute my strategies effectively
4.Be able to complete a 26+2 FC within 19 minutes
5.Remain calm when scouts arrive at 12-14 minutes
6.Refrain from making Age of Empires II jokes in chat
What do you think?
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14486ArghCaptainJackGuestHonestly, sticking with one single build/civ is probably the easiest way to go from 700 to 900.
Find a build order and civ that suits your style.
Like cav?
Try Franks.
Like archers?
Try Britons.
Like macro?
Try closed maps that give you time to really build into a solid eco.
I’d recommend banning Arena for awhile, to be honest.
Lots of people practice very greedy strats in order to take advantage of the walls, and this makes it a very “all or nothing” style of play.
Arabia (in my opinion) provides the most diversity, even when people pick the same civs each game.
If you’re having trouble with build orders, try out the Interactive Build Order mod.
It’s a great way to practice and get rated on your performance, without the stress of an opponent.
A few other general tips:
* At 700 elo, I would not expect your opponents to have much, if any, micro, this means that the defenders advantage is huge.
If your opponent is pushing you with scouts, 1-4 spears will be enough to defend your entire base, and they will most likely run into your TC when not paying attention, so take advantage of that!
* Don’t be afraid to wall your base in late dark age, it’s very effective and gives you some breathing room.
Just don’t use more than like 3-4 vils to build walls, it will slow your eco down way too much.
* Scouting.
I know it’s hard to manage, but focusing on your scouting can really make a huge difference.
Seeing what your opponent is up to gives you the time you need to get ready for it.
Try just scouting for a few crucial things (early barracks?
be ready for militia/man at arms with small walls around your resources) (stable right after they hit feudal?
Queue up 4 spears and put them on defensive stance near your weak spots (continue walling)) (range right after feudal?
add your own range and make some skirms.
Don’t forget the archer armor upgrade for your skirms, it will let you destroy archers!).
All of this is easier said than done, but start practicing now and you’ll eventually internalize this decision tree so that all you have to do is focus on your build.
* This one also just takes time, but start to get a feel for which civs pull off which strats.
Franks?
They’re most likely going for a scout rush into knights.
Ethiopians?
Probably archers or man-at-arms into archers/crossbow.
This will decrease the cognitive load so that you only need to spend brain power if your scouting proves your assumption wrong.
* Is your opponent going for a greedy fast castle on an open map?
PUNISH THEM!
If you see that they’re in dark age longer than expected, or fully walled very early, it’s probably a good idea to apply some pressure.
Lots of people will get flustered under pressure and it will ruin their build order.
Break in with a couple of scouts, or 6-8 archers with fletching and you’ll be able to find damage and teach them an important lesson about greed! 😛
* Make friends with people who are better than you.
A sparring partner above your level is a great way to learn via tough love.
Have them scout rush you on repeat until you manage to defend against it properly.
Have fun out there!

February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14487leading_suspectGuestI would say practice some simple build orders vs.
the AI (scouts into knights, scouts into skirms), pausing when you need a moment to make sure you’re on track.
Like you said, keeping your TC running through dark and Feudal age is critical and will put you at a clear advantage.
Early aggression can be very overwhelming at your elo.
If you can practice your build so you get military out quickly you will have a big leg up.
Remember, early attacks on your enemy are not to kill villagers (its a good thing though), it’s to idle his eco and force them to respond.
Run in, hit a few vils, then run out, check your eco (wood to farms, build a house), then repeat.
This should steamroll most opponents.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14488Koala_eiOGuestHaving fun is an important point.
If you play to increase your Elo, you will just be stressed.
Reviewing your games (both wins and losses) with CaptureAge is big to help you fix your mistakes.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14489wbcbane_GuestI would say you need to aim for 0-10s idle TC on Dark Age as something you do as easily as breathe.
Cicero’s build order scenarios are golden to try and achieve good timings on simple build orders.
Highly recommend them.
Look for other players in similar situations that can understand your woes and discuss strategy, this not only help you but the community as a whole.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14490Muted-Ad-8637Guest2 tips:
Ban arabia and arena, thus avoid single trick/single civ players who do the same tacts over and over again
Have at least 9 hotkeys on muscle memory, preferably new vil, idle vil, basic eco(lumbjack, mill, mine, farm), basic mil(barcks, stabl, range)

Is incorrect.
You need to make more puns to keep your opponent distracted to hit higher elo
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14492NahimBZGuestI’m at the 1100ish level, but spent quite a bit of time at 800-900.
One thing I noticed was that a lot of players below 900 stop villager production once they reach around 70-80 vills.
They also do not replenish vills afterwards.
So if you regularly produce 120+ vills, you will win the majority of games that reach imperial age.
That’s what happened to me when I was at 800ish: I lost many games early, but would win most of the time if the game went late.
This of course goes hand in hand with not resigning early.
Since you are committed to producing 120+ vills and your opponent is (often) not, you have the long-run advantage, and you can sometimes recover from very bad positions.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14493Scoo_ByGuestPlay Magyars, open spears, make 6 and keep them stand ground around vulnerable resources against scouts.
Go castle age for 2 stable knights with 35~37 vils at around 20-21 mins, and keep making vils+knights.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14494smilingstalinGuestSpeaking from my own experience, I found that it was helpful to learn strats that people were largely unfamiliar with and had little experience with countering.
In my case, I was somewhere around the ~1100 Elo range before I decided to “invent” my own strat which took me up to about 1500 Elo in about 4 months.
That said, the ~1100 starting point is probably somewhat deceptive/inaccurate because I really hadn’t played much 1v1 (fewer than 30 games) before deciding to commit to my journey.
Regardless, I decided to “invent” the Spaghetti Drop for Arena after some trial and error, and over time learned all the ways that folks seemed to attempt to counter it.
Eventually made it to around 1509 before I hit my ceiling and the strat received somewhat of a nerf from the devs.
Then the next thing I tried to do was the Berber Vill Rush on Arabia.
By this time, my Spaghetti Drop Elo had settled around the 1300s, in part due to the nerf but also due to some rustiness from having not played 1v1 in several months.
I picked up the Berber Vill Rush and dropped to around 1200s before getting the hang of it and driving up to about 1530 Elo on a win streak before I got bored of 1v1s again and stopped playing.
I suspect I could have gone higher; perhaps to the 1600s if I stuck with it and committed.
Perhaps even higher than that if I practiced for a few more months.
All this to say that I think committing to learning some unorthodox strats can be a fast-track to raising Elo fairly quickly.
Reasons why I think this works is that 1) folks very rarely know how to counter and the players with genuinely strong adaptation skills are likely at the much higher Elos (1600+?) and 2) it can be a lot easier to improve one or a few very specific skills rather than a broad set of many skills.
February 21, 2023 at 7:54 am #14495russianpolarbear32Guestfrom 0 to 1300 elo is just executing decently a BO, use the resources and try to not idle tcs or military buildings too much.
