I think the biggest factor is the much more hands off approach by microsoft.

Too many devs try to go the involved route and essentially kill the game by forcing dumb shit on tournament organisers.

Aoe2 scene is driven by people who genuinely care about the game and you see it shine through in many aspects.

Gee it’s almost as if everyone being coordinated and on agreement to try to make a better future for everyone ends on a self fulfilling prophecy

Makes you wonder what else you could apply that towards huh

I love our pro scene here!!

The fact that top players who regularly compete with each other for the top spot, know each other well enough to just troll each other for the laughs during ranked games is honestly heartwarming to see.

And you can tell that the digs they make (like the daut castles) are not mean spirited but aimed to tease.

Not to mention that the fact that some (low-key) frustrated outbursts by players are rare enough to be considered “drama”, speaks volumes I feel.

As for Pesti, I can sympathize with the guy.

It’s really sad to do so much and not get the proper appreciation for it.

I don’t really follow Aoe4 after giving it a try initially, but from what I understand the man basically *was* its tournament scene by himself.

That shouldn’t put him on a pedestal of course, but if he’s not even getting the credit he deserves, that sucks…

Makes me all the more appreciative of what we have here in Aoe2 to be honest.

**PS1**: I think the Grand Melee was well appreciated by fans as well, not just pros.

The games were insane and any criticism was aimed at the organization and was valid imho.

It was announced very short notice, it needed some “fluff” in its presentation during and better marketing leading up to it.

Finally the abrupt ending was just a clear miss.

But that’s nothing they can’t easily fix next time and I for one was thankful for them making it happen.

**PS2**: I won’t pretend that we don’t have some toxic people here, they exist in any community.

Ours became apparent when Aoe4 came out and they felt defensive.

However I think those were a small vocal minority and most Aoe2 players were at best intrigued and at worst indifferent about Aoe4.

I just wanna thank all the tourney hosts/admins/mad designers/ect with AOE2.

    Even the bald ones.

    I appreciate all of you!

The reason for this is the whole community was playing/casting/watching basically a dead game.

Noone did it for the money or fame, but out of genuine love for the best game ever.

Many people have put insane amount of work to present it to a wider audience and eventually after DE there was enough exposure for establishing a “Pro” scene and also a casting/streaming scene.

But all of them been through the Dark ages of this game, so now the fact that they can play/cast and even earn money from that is just amazing and is understandable to be super positive and welcoming.

And that’s really the difference between this and most other communities – at every level we just love this game!

Such a shame Aoezone was lost to just a handful of resentful idiots.

Fewer than 10 people destroyed the best aoe forum, and according to them they’re victims fighting against the corrupt aoe2 elite lol.

The Age of Empires II community really is an example of positivity and friendliness, and not just on the pro level.

It amazes me that virtually every single online game that I’ve played in this game ended with a friendly GG regardless of victory or defeat and that the opponents are willing to either help me improve or ask for advice for themselves on how to improve instead of doing all the dumb stuff that’s being done in the vast majority of online games nowadays.

Big thank you to the pros for leading the way and showing how an online game community can shine with respect for the opponents and friendliness.

Also big thank you to every single one of you out there, from the casuals to the advanced players for doing the same!

I was also in Heidelberg and my experience there can only confirm the perception of our community.

The whole weekend I met only nice people, whether in the castle, at breakfast in the hotel or at the Dubliner’s Pub.

Also seeing how XBOX players who experience the game for the first time are welcomed and get their questions answered immediately in a nice and helpful way here on Reddit is just great.

Thanks to each and every one of you for making this community so awesome! <3

Amazing words from Pesti and it was great to read your thoughts too.

Everytime I talk about AoE2 with a friend who doesn’t play it or doesn’t watch the tournaments, the first thing I talk about is how welcoming it is.

I think that your point about criticism is crucial to all of this.

    They’re not positivity zombies.

They dislike stuff about the game probably, they complain about certain strategies and about the game has.

But they always do it respectfully.

There could be easily some “bad rivalries” against some players and if Red Bull Wololo taught us something is that after the match ends they all like playing against each other.

Tatoh was the champion and all of the other players, casters (everyone really) went to party with him.

And if the champion was Viper, Lieerey, Hera, DauT or anyone else it would’ve happened the same thing.

Having a person like Viper as the biggest ambassador of this game for a decade (basically Masmo’s words btw) imo led to an immeasurable amount of positivity throughout the entire community.

    Viper is a true leader.

Wherever I go, if the strongest and the best one at the top leads by a humble example, it always leaves flourishing and fruitful trace.

And this is a big part of what we’re experiencing right now imo.

I remember thinking in 2014 or 2015 how cool it is that I dont see beef at the top of the AoE2 players.

Because I have seen that in basically every other game.

And it has been that way ever since then.

I love our pros <3 The way everyone is always courteous and friendly, so much so that the “Hera said knights counter pikes” thing was the height of “drama” in the scene is almost hilarious.

Whenever I watch an event I always have a feeling that I and most of the viewers don’t even root for any one player, but just for the games to be good.

I barely ever see people saying “go so-and-so!” It’s always “damn this is an insane game!”.

    Feel sorry for Pesti though.

I dot a lot of volunteer work and I know how dejecting it can be to feel unappreciated or taken for granted.

Hope he finds happiness in his next endeavour.
