Pesti, the main organizer behind AoE4 tournaments, recently shared a long post on the Age 4 Reddit. In the post, they made some remarks about the AoE2 scene that really stood out to me.
Pesti discussed how they were met with appreciation and gratitude from AoE2 players, even though they had gained nothing from the AoE4 project.
This showed the strength of the AoE2 community, as everyone was unified in their goal to make the game and its tournaments a success.
Pesti also highlighted the importance of mutual respect and support between stakeholders in the community.
They noted that while there may be criticism behind closed doors, when it comes to the public, everyone is unified in their goal to make the tournaments successful.
They noted that the recent Grand Melee event was a great example of this, despite some teething problems.
Viper’s Tweet in response to this further highlighted the positive atmosphere of the community.
Pesti also noted the importance of constructive criticism, rather than criticism that is insulting or destructive.
They reminded people that tournament organizers are not perfect, and that mistakes are inevitable.
They urged people to be disappointed, but to also be supportive and helpful with their feedback.
Overall, Pesti’s post highlighted the strength of the AoE2 community, and the importance of mutual respect and support between stakeholders.
It also reminded people to be constructive with their criticism and to not be destructive or insulting.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13801OkayTimeForPlanCGuestThis is exactly why the aoe2 pro scene is the only esports scene i follow.
Very respectful and adult people, same with the community, who all lobe this game.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13813KahlenarGuestThese lines about the Grand Melee are so nice and interesting.
After its weak points were questioned (mostly the hype/advertising for it i think?) people all seemed to step into gear and make it work out.
Good stuff.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13812BattleshipVenetoGuestwe lobe this game!
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13811jeowaypointGuestI have no idea who that is or what EGCTV is, but lord patito I know from aoezone, cool and passionate guy.
I am sad to see that aoe4 isn’t supporting a good environment, although it seemed quite clear during N4C to me.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13810paradox909GuestHis piece was quite hard to read and I do think he overstates the sunshine and rainbows of aoe2.
I would agree that most of the top top pros are very respectful, but we’ve had various instances of player complaints that are quite unreasonable, in the middle of tournaments and then time and time again players not really being a part of discussions of how to improve things going forward.
We still have a very long way to go as well.
Many tournament organisers have expressed similar feelings in aoe2 and I know quite a few of them few feel very under appreciated.
Hosting tournaments is not easy.
It can come with a lot of mental stress and as Pesti said can be very isolating.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13809xThomasGuestwhen was aoe2 a dead game?
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13808BigTastyBaconAOEGuestI didn’t check who wrote this post initially, but halfway through it i thought: “this has to be an Umdeuter post!”
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13807depthofuniverseGuestNever realized how privileged we are in aoe2 to have many tournament hosts and diverse type of games, until looking over at aoe4 scene.
Hope they can figure it out
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13806cuddlepwinceGuestCan someone eli5 tldr what’s going on?
I don’t really follow aoe4 but watch every aoe2 event religiously
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13805JotaJota912GuestOff topic, but I love that the sports reference in the title quote makes no sense.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13804RustyBrakesGuestI think we are actually lucky to have a game with such longevity that a large part of the player-base and community has aged like fine wine along with it.
Either by example or by attracting like minded people, the younger generation of players and fans are also very even tempered and grateful for what we have.
I also feel that having occasional lulls in popularity of the game has made us very positive about growth, and willing to look past small problems along the way.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13803CamRothGuestI wonder if Pesti has been fortunate enough to never go to aoezone.
But yeah the pros here are mostly pretty chill which is great.
The AoE2 community is definitely not some pinnacle of wholesomeness though.
Lost any claim to that with the overall reaction towards AoE4.
It really sucks that some of the AoE4 pros are assholes.
EGCTV has been carrying the esports scene.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13802nikkythegreatGuestEGCTV should try hosting a few aoe2 tournaments and see how different our community is.
February 18, 2023 at 9:53 pm #13800FloosWorldGuestI don’t know if that makes sense but I feel like the part of AoE 4’s pros that came over from SC2 and other Blizzard RTS carried the toxic behaviour those scenes are known for over to AoE 4.
