You have to define what is “good” or “bad” to the game.
If we agree the aim is to increase variety of strategies (which seems reasonable for an RTS), then I would say it is bad from my own mid-elo experience on Arabia.
I don’t feel much about the upgrade cost increase in meta archer plays (i.e.
archer > xbow > ballistics/tcs), but do feel the difference in these scenarios:
1.
drush fc xbow
Honestly this was already pretty bad after multiple wall nerfs, but the cost increase was the final straw.
2.
xbow > knight
I used to like playing drush/maa > archer with cav civ (such as franks) and switch to knights after xbow+bodkin.
Now I find it more difficult to get knight production rolling (+cav upgrades).
3. 1tc fast imp arb
It is now difficult to afford the trifecta of arb+bracer+chem after reaching imp on 1tc.
The 3 techs add up to 1050f 800g, i.e.
another imp.
After the change I find myself gravitated towards more straight-forward plays (knights on 3tc, xbow on 3tc), rather than the above strats.
Which is bad in my book.
That said, these are just my experiences.
It is definitely another story in pro level plays.
For example, 1tc fast imp was devastating in the hands of Liereyy.
