Effect of Archer Nerf: Good or Bad for the Game?

Several months ago, the prices to upgrade Crossbowmen and Arbalesters were lifted considerably.

This change was quite significant because the cost to upgrade had not been altered since the Age of Kings.

With some time having passed since this adjustment and observing its impact on the game, do you believe it was a positive or negative modification?

    Xbow upgrade nerf was deserved.

Attack move behavior change was good.

But also increase Arbalest upgrade cost was too much.

You have to define what is “good” or “bad” to the game.

If we agree the aim is to increase variety of strategies (which seems reasonable for an RTS), then I would say it is bad from my own mid-elo experience on Arabia.

I don’t feel much about the upgrade cost increase in meta archer plays (i.e.

archer > xbow > ballistics/tcs), but do feel the difference in these scenarios:

    1.

    drush fc xbow

Honestly this was already pretty bad after multiple wall nerfs, but the cost increase was the final straw.

    2.

    xbow > knight

I used to like playing drush/maa > archer with cav civ (such as franks) and switch to knights after xbow+bodkin.

Now I find it more difficult to get knight production rolling (+cav upgrades).

    3. 1tc fast imp arb

It is now difficult to afford the trifecta of arb+bracer+chem after reaching imp on 1tc.

    The 3 techs add up to 1050f 800g, i.e.

    another imp.

After the change I find myself gravitated towards more straight-forward plays (knights on 3tc, xbow on 3tc), rather than the above strats.

Which is bad in my book.

That said, these are just my experiences.

It is definitely another story in pro level plays.

For example, 1tc fast imp was devastating in the hands of Liereyy.

Just nerf Sicilians, and then it won’t matter too much, as that’ll help perfectly balance everything out.

Sicilian nerf, every civ gets pre nerf archers when playing against them.

It was good for the game but we need a nerf to knights, or at least the strongest knight civs.

Nerf/buff by price changes seems to be a subtle way of changing the balance without going overboard.

    E.g.

    archer upgrades, Hauberk.

    Ban shriwamshas option where?

I think the xbow upgrade cost is good, arbs sometime i found too expensive when I play them, but too easy to get when my opp gets them and even kills my castle age skirms like it’s poor fauna

Husbandry should just be 250 again.

Or a 10% speed nerf to cavalry across the board as long as the speed rank is not upset.
