Truth be told, I prefer where I’m at now.
Not overly strict with build orders and meta, but no clueless 3+ hour matches either.
As for the social aspect: I have board game and roleplay days/weekends for that!
This is exactly how my friend and I play.
Amazon Tunnels, hardest AI with at least one team.
Wall yourself in, try and hold off the attacks and then work out how on earth you counter attack…
So much more fun that following a set pattern
Even back then there were build orders but yeah I know wachu mean
Nah, I like 30 minute games.
I get tired out after an hour or two of playing and will just resign out of frustration.

What’s stopping you from still doing this?
This is the way
My friends and I still play like this
I miss the epic victories of my dreams where I imagined I was competent at executing a deadly game plan.
I don’t miss fumbling through marathon games that end after one hilariously incompetent battle because someone’s UU is a better match against everyone else’s.
On the rare occasion you can get the dial up to survive long enough…
I’m happier now feeling at least vaguely competent and like I can execute some sort of a realistic plan.
Also all-in m@a + tower rushing.
And finishing under 30 minutes.
I didn’t play in many LAN parties, but back in the day I did played LAN a couple of times vs.
my friends and vs.
my brother and my cousins, but I’m sorry to say that I was the one ruining the fun of all by attacking very fast in castle age with a bunch of plumed archers (I loved mayans).
They didn’t invite me again.
Absolutely.
I told my friend I’m playing aoe2 again and he was gobsmacked that games last 30mins instead of 3hrs+
You can still do this.
Me and my buddies I play with have a pretty wide skill gap, so we just play games like BF or Amazon tunnel against the AI, so we can control where the fights go down more or less and take them all together.
Equalizes the skill gap pretty nicely.
Then I get my ranked fix in 1v1s on the ladder.
You should consider trying out games like Civilization.
I’m not joking or trying to be demeaning, a lot of people play RTS games as if they were city builders but they’d likely have way more fun actually going for the genre that actively supports the playstyle they prefer.
There’s a lot of options at varying degrees of speed, micro/macro focus etc.
I still play like that.
against standard AI.
It’s GREAT!
I used to laugh at ppl having too many villagers because I thought it was inefficient.
You need 20 vills and 180 army!
