What if we imagined a civilization that is unable to construct even the most basic of fortifications, such as palisade walls?
Could this be done in a way that is balanced and still viable?
Is it feasible for a civilization to exist without any form of defensive walls or barriers?
So far, only the Goths and Cumans have been able to thrive without stone walls.
What strategies could such a civilization employ to protect itself?
Could they rely on other methods such as diplomacy or subterfuge?
Would they be able to survive in a hostile environment without the protection of walls?
These are some of the questions we should consider when exploring the viability of a civilization without fortifications.
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8385Artisan126GuestThe Huns can’t build house walls, and they’re still viable (though not really in Nomad due to the wood penalty).
It could work, if implemented well.

Or islands.
On arabia?
Garbage unless their houses were way cheaper.
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8393russianpolarbear32Guestso, huns?
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8392PantheristGuestYep people can wall with houses.
I think such a civ should have an alternative to quickwalls, though; maybe really weak 1-tile fences that can hold for a bit.
And yeah their defensive structures should be slightly buffed and they should preferably have a bonus suited to early game aggression.
I was also thinking they should have a creative bonus like Loom giving more HP.
This would also make their forwarding and trushes strong.
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8391Then-Mulberry-1557GuestI think the closest we have to this is Khmer, where houses already act as gates for vills
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8390Motor_PrudentGuestSure “X can’t build walls but villagers can garrison in mill, lumber, or mining camps”
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8389JarlFrankGuestUltimate challenge civ: Hunnic no house bonus but can’t build any walls either.
Have fun with raids!
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8388cavehag13GuestWouldn’t be terrible.
I already turn AI player walls against them once I clear out the interior of their base.
They are too dumb to attack or destroy their own walls to gain entry back into their spot.
And there’s usually good defensive geographical features on maps like cliffs or islands.
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8387emeriassGuestReturn full resource of under constraction building on cancel, and enemy attack cancel?
Villagers farming right next to mill gain extra armor +1/age while working.
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8386UnbridledscumGuestWell, really you’re taking away a civs ability to build cheap 1×1 wooden walls because they can still use other buildings in place of walls.
Don’t give them some special alternative wall because that defies the whole point of this exercise.
Also, what kind of civ doesn’t know how to build a wall??
I’d guess you’d want something like the Khmer house garrison.
But, that one already exists.
I’d suggest…
* Mills, Lumber camps, Mining Camps have +X LOS and can garrison 2 villagers.
* Stable, Archery Range, Skirmishers, and Spearmen available in Dark Age.February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8384MarionberryCool7176GuestTo be honest it’s unbalancable due to how big microability plays a role in AOE II.
You need an accessible 1 tile building to quickwall. (Outpost costs stone)
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8383insta_eugenociderGuesthuns without houses means hyper intelligent scouting and base design as quick wall options arent as valuable.
aggression also counter offsets this
cumans on a double tc doesnt worry about no stone walls at all and goths are a hyper aggressive inf civ with strat options again to further offset this.
dm style dont wall.
its an important mechanic tho since aoe1
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8382DocSanchezAOE2GuestIt’s possible for sure, but if you gave them a big eco or military bonus to compensate then it woupd be broken on Closed maps!
February 3, 2023 at 1:29 am #8381SnikhopGuestI like it.
It’s totally possible to play open, people do it all the time, so the idea that you’d automatically die on open maps is quite silly.
It would obviously have to be compensated somehow but I don’t think that needs to be a specific defensive bonus, you can just defend with military.
That said maybe something like a skirm bonus would be natural, skirms do +1 damage would be a fun one that scales all the way through to Imp but isn’t gamebreaking.
One thing to consider is that you don’t balance TOO hard the other way because remember Arena exists, which already makes both Goths and Cumans quite strong picks on that map.
Probably you’d just get lots of housewalls if people are REALLY desperate to full wall.
