Can Nomads Succeed Without Competing for Water?

I have been playing a lot of Nomad lately and my ELO is around 1150, which is much lower than when I used to play Arabia and other open maps, where I was around 1300 ELO.

I am really struggling with this map and am trying to improve.

I had the idea of not building a second dock in the early game to save resources, but it hasn’t been working out.

My plan was to use the saved wood to get an advantage on land over my opponent, but it hasn’t been successful.

I am wondering if my strategy is fundamentally wrong or if I am just not playing it correctly.

It’s even a common strat when you play castle drop civs like spanish or portuguese.

But obviously you can’t boom and you usually need to go all in 1 tc and make dmg fast.

I would say that this highly depends on the map and your dock position.

If you are far away from your opponent on land or don’t even know where he is located, it is a high risk.

On the other side, if your docks are next to each other, I would fight for water.

In General, I would always invest a little on water to make my opponent overinvest.

And last but not least, it depends on the overall civ match up.

Yes, this is a viable strategy.

It would probably be better if you built 1-2 defensive ships.

making one or two ships forces your opponent to make a LOT of ships, he doesn’t know how many you will end up having.

Ships on defense are quite a bit stronger than on offense because of the crazy amount of time it takes to scout out enemy ships and produce offensive ships.

It can work if you pick Vietnamese and completely kill their land eco with archers.

You can even re dock in a different location later on and take water back.

    Experience at 1100 elo.

Water is more efficient, but costs investment.

A non-water counter needs to be a rush strategy to punish before the fishing investment has had time to pay off.

Most pros go 6 fishing ships dark on nomad anyway because it’s basically free and takes too long to punish.

By the time opponent has send one fire ship to stop it they have all paid for themselves

    It’s definitely viable.

If you’re docked far away, then you can get away with FC into UU with Spanish or Portuguese.

If you archer and tower rush.

He will definitely hit castle, but deny golds and woods and he will have nothing.

    Easier said than done though.

if u find that the map is landlocked, its likely that u and ur oponent are really far away, so in that case, yeah, it does work, but if u r right next to each other, ull be way behind in food
