Can I Be Matched with Poorly-Performing Players Online as a Sluggish Turtle Gamer?

I have always been a big fan of AOE2 and have fond memories of long, drawn-out missions from the early to mid 2000s.

I love the slower pace of the game.

I am interested in trying online, but I fear that with all the meta strategies, build orders, and rushes, I will get destroyed.

I understand that, like many competitive games, it takes a few losses to get to a skill level (ELO) that is suitable for a player.

Once established, is the matchmaking system accurate?

I would like to play with people who are at a similar skill level rather than constantly getting beat.

Are there any other players out there who prefer a slower pace, like myself?

I am not interested in becoming a master of the game, but rather just seeing how other less experienced players play, outside of the typical metas described by YouTubers.

the matchmaking works exactly the same for all players, no matter if youre aggressive or defensive.

the only difference is that for an aggressive and a defensive player (assuming same elo) it takes the defensive player longer to win the same number of games.

put differently: if i lose 50% of my games at 15minutes to a strong feudal opening, but win the other 50% after a late imp grindfest, it might *feel* like bad matchmaking, despite its actually perfectly fine

I’d say slower players that prefer turtling with few to no feudal aggression can be found on the lower end of the ladder, so yep.

Just be aware that you need to loose a couple of games before eventually being matched with players on your skill.

AoE 2 DE’s matchmaking system has 10 placement games that match you up against a broader ranger of players, so you will win/loose more Elo than usual depending on the outcome of the game before the system matches you up against players that are relatively close in Elo.

Yea, the match making is pretty accurate giving u opponents which r ur skill Level.

It will take a time “probably 20 matches for me” but than its working how it it is supposed to work (Rated me at 900 elo, after many matches got stuck in 1350-1450 and I would say im as good as it represents on elo number)

Matchmaking works fine and you will get good games.

Incase your elo is below 600, I recommend “getting better” by practicing some build orders etc.

Below 600 the number of players start to drop significantly and you may not get competitive/even games.

Yes after the way down you get matched with evenly skilled opponents, and there’s always someone playing worse/ having a worse day.

matchmaking on AOE2 is pretty good, it should take a lil while (somewhere around 10-15 matches) for u to get to your elo, after that, it should be pretty easy going, with u winning about 50% of the games

It will work but it won’t necessarily match you with people who play similar, it’s just that most low elo players like to wait until imperial age to attack.

Also a better alternative is to play black forest, Amazon tunnel or michi custom games, if you want Arabia specifically then make a “no rushing” lobby and have a 10-30 minute treaty.

I’ll just add feudal aggression works amazingly well at low ELOs.

I rushed a couple folks last night and ended both games in early castle.

    I am <1000 ELO.

Give yourself about 10-15 ranked games and it will probably place you in a good spot, i cast lots of players who are <800 elo and they all play there own style 90% of the time.

I imagine around 500-800you will find a place you can have good competition!

Most importantly though, find something you enjoy and play that!

Lots of streamers and lobby games that are lots of fun to play with.

Ha, I remember back in the 2000s trying to play online and getting demolished in 15 min 😭

You can also try more team games, because at the lower ELOs very few people rush. 1v1 will always have people trying something like scouts even at low ELO

Could take a while, maybe up to 20 games or so, but you’ll get matched with roughly equal opponents eventually.

Ranked is mostly people playing to win.

You’d probably get more satisfaction putting out feelers for others who like that kind of play style and doing custom lobby games.
