I always enjoy playing games that require competition.
I started with LoL, where I reached mid-diamond, and then progressed to WoT, where I was ranked in the top 98/99%.
However, I have always struggled with RTS games.
AoE2 is a game that I love, and I remember playing it with friends during LAN parties in the past.
Coming back to the game as an adult is nostalgic and fun, but I find myself struggling to improve.
Though I have played almost 180 games, my ranking is just hovering around 1k elo, which is quite low.
In RTS games, a player’s APM (actions per minute) is typically critical to success.
Unfortunately, I don’t think I will ever be able to play at a fast pace.
Nevertheless, I was good at LoL and WoT, despite my lack of mechanical prowess.
My question is, to what extent can macro compensate for bad micro in AoE2?
I don’t aim to be amazing, and being ranked comfortably at 1500 elo would satisfy my competitive drive/ego.
Also, when reviewing my games, what are the most crucial aspects to monitor and observe?
Currently, I mainly focus on TC idle, villager count, and up times, but I would appreciate any expert tips to improve my game review process.
APM/eAPM isn’t a cause, it’s a symptom.
It will naturally increase as you progress in managing you eco/army/production.
Spamming key just to increase your APM (won’t affect eAPM) will net you 0 benefit, except maybe accelerating a carpal tunnel issue.
Also, as other people mentionned, AoE is a lower APM game than say Starcraft
Im at 1400 with 30 eapm lol
I’m 1k myself, 1500 should be doable if you put in the effort, there are slower players up there.
Also, if you only have ~200 games, you should get a bit faster naturally with practice anyway…
Capture age shows EAPM which negates generic tasks like cycling commands etc.
Your total APM could be double, triple or even 4 times your EAPM.
I wish Capture Age adds APM stat too because people can see how effective they are with their clicks.
Overall, APM matters more if you want to play at a very high level.
I do believe there’s a baseline APM one needs to cross a certain threshold in terms of skill but on average, make the right decisions and you’re probably fine.
Im 1450 with an average of 25 eAPM.
I also play on a laptop.
Daut is an absolute legend of the game and probably has around 60-70 APM.
Getting to 1500 at your APM is perfectly reasonable.
50 apm is niiiiiiice
There is a youtuber called me planner who has low APM but 2k elo.
Mbl beat a 1700 elo with only a mouse.
You can easily be 1500.
I am 1100 with 30eapm
I would stop playing everyday and start watching coaching/review recordings.
You can learn a lot from youtubers like Survivalist giving advice to others.
you can reach 2k with 30 eapm as long as you are efficient and dont click 10 times the same action.

EAPM is the most overrated “skill” in the game, dont even focus on this.
I’ve been up to 1350 elo and my APM is about 17!
Game knowledge and decisions > apm.
I peaked at 1700 and am almost certain slower than players like memb, etc. (I barely ever play archers for example, because i get outmicroed like crazy / cant fight mangonels)
Are we talking 50 total apm, or 50 eapm?
Daut has 50 apm
