Watch what they’re doing in a replay and then try to replicate it at first.
When you see someone counter that or defend repeat the same process and keep adding new strategies to your repertoire
Ideally though you’d want to attack first in this game especially at the starting elos.
At the average elo people panic if they get rushed effectively and make sloppy mistakes more often than not which you can punish, likewise you might end up suffering the same result on the backfoot unless you’re really experienced
To defend a raid starts in the lobby.
Play ranked first off if you aren’t already.
You need to have even matchups or you won’t get better or understand why you are losing games.
When the map is shown pick an appropriate civ you are comfortable with.
If it’s Arabia, expect to be playing on hard mode if you pick goths for example.
When you see the enemy matchup try to identify who scales better and what kind of raid they might do.
When you scout their base, check for production buildings.
If you see dark age gold miners + barracks, you are being drushed.
If you see a stable in feudal, you are getting scout rushed, and if it’s archery ranges and a lot on wood + gold you are getting archer rushed.
To counter drush you need to tight wall your resources.
Against scouts, do this and make at least 2 spearmen, maybe commit more if the scouts keep rolling in.
Against archer civs, it’s usually a good idea to scout rush them and transition into archers yourself.
The first player to mass archers will have the snowball lead.
If you get tower rushed, immediately counter tower and drop a mining camp on stone.
You need to deny their tower chain from taking you off everything or you will lose, match more towers if needed.
There is a dark age militia rush that hits around 8-9 minutes.
There are various feudal rushes that hit 10-12 minutes.
They can get up to castle age to boom around 15 minutes, maybe the same time if they are stopping making villagers to make military units but usually little later for castle aggression.
Those be some common windows to worry about on open maps.
You gotta kinda feel the situation and scout out which of these is happening and what kind of response you need to make.
But also you should probably be doing one of these builds yourself.
