Anonymous PlayerMemberIn my opinion, the Berbers are the perfect civilization for inexperienced players. They have a strong economic advantage and the ability to convert enemy units with Redemption. The only drawback is their lack of halberdiers and arbalests, but their camel units and unique unit make up for it. Additionally, their Genitours are effective in trash wars and are not vulnerable to hussars. It’s also amusing that the Berbers are a counter to popular beginner civilizations like the Franks and English. It’s funny that the only strategy I know is effective against the only strategy that low-rated Frank and English players usually choose.

BubblyMangoGuestthey dont really hard counter Franks, but they are definitely decent against them. Franks still have the upper hand in feudal with the better eco and higher HP scouts, which usually leads to a faster castle age. but if the berber player can survive to castle age and utilizes its option without over committing to camels then yeah, its a good matchup.

jawstrockGuestI play Berbers more than anything else, and I find them fun to play. I play Berbers and tatars on pretty much all non-arena maps. Doesn’t make me a noob, although I am, just how I like to play. I play 3-5 games a week, I am not playing enough to learn and have fun with lots of different civs and their complexities.

Misteral_EditorialGuestWhat eco bonus? 10% faster vils is like a 3% faster farming and chopping bonus. I guess it makes boar lures pretty safe. It’s more impactful for combat, running away or dropping buildings.
Sure, cav is really cheap, but cav isn’t always the answer.

PhantasticForGuestDimifseulah! I ❤ Berbers, I honestly think if they had a European aesthetic, they would be even more popular. I also love that they are a noob civ -counter civ, but aren’t OP enough to get flamed (unlike Gurjaras and Hindustanis). I hope AOE4 eventually gets them.

Hungry_kereruGuestI love any civ that counters Franks or Briton’s as that’s all you come up against 900-1000 elo

you-again13GuestNah I do the same with the Lithuanians. Trying to get some experience with others at the moment though.

29RogansGuestyep berbers kinda super strong civ. their tech tree is so open, that they loose options in all tech mod.

supervoegliGuestberbers do absolutely not counter britons. probably whats happening instead is that 900 elo opponents dont know how archers work.

total_score2GuestThey don’t have an eco bonus, the faster moving vills is like 3% faster farming, it is negligible.

LocalGMGuestI’m a Bulgarian main and that’s how you know I’m a noob cause only noobs “main” a civ in this game imo

ChabootayGuestI was also once like you, just always playing one civ- Berber’s just because I felt so comfortable with it. Soon I realized I was missing out on learning so many amazing civs and what they had to offer. Not only I started to climb the ELO ladder because of this but I have gotten much better at understanding civ weaknesses.

entity279_GuestThe use of the word “nation” would suggest that indeed you might very well be a noob

adquenGuestBerbers are a fun and exciting civ with many options, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying them. I love playing them. That being said, they are definitely not without their weaknesses:
Firstof, pre Castle Age you playing pretty much without a bonus. The vil bonus is a nice defensive bonus against infantry openings, but that’s about it. Good scout rush civs hit harder and earlier, good archer civs have better archers, good hybrid civs (on a hybrid map) get out fishing eco much faster and have better uptimes.
Secondly, you rely a lot on your mounted options and therefore have a bit of a weakness against busted Camel civs (like Hindustanis or Gujaras, to a lesser extent Byzantines) and good Halbardier civs. Already pikemen pushes in castle can be tricky and if you have no access to stone at this point, you’re really fighting an uphill battle.
