AOE2 has recently been added to Xbox Game Pass, so I’m looking for advice on how to play.
I’m planning to take a defensive approach, but I’m unsure which civilization to pick.
Are there any other tips that you can offer?
Good luck!
We are new to controllers as well, so we are learning alongside you.
Byzantines are always good for beginners though.
In the early days basic unit control and build orders are the most important.
This game is about action sequencing.
Basically everyone follows a build order of some sort and improvises from there.
You need to reach Feudal Age at a competitive time with a reasonable eco.
Build orders get you there.
Don’t try to reinvent the wheel.
From Feudal forward is when you get to be more creative.
Civs for new comers are typically Franks, Teutons, Britons, Byzantines and Japanese.
I would avoid Huns because they don’t need houses and making houses is a fundamental skill.
There is a user here who started playing the civs in Alphabetical order and honestly it’s given them great results.
The two in-game tutorials are pretty good (Art of War and William Wallace).

I play on pc, not too sure of the changes made for xbox, but the basic game mechanics should be fairly similar, so these will help.
