A Surge of Fresh Xbox Gamers Should Stimulate a Vital Repair to the Ranked Ladder

The current state of the ranked ladder in Age of Empires 2 is a major issue that discourages beginner players from participating.

A Reddit user, Umdeuter, posted about this issue some time ago, highlighting the fact that it requires a large number of consecutive, disheartening losses for a player’s Elo to reach the lowest point.

This can be seen on aoe2.net, where there are hundreds of players with either 0 or 1 win, and more than 10 games played.

This is a huge problem for the ranked scene.

New players are often told to remain patient and resign early in their first few games.

This takes up a lot of time; with a two minute queue and five minutes to avoid timeout, it takes seven minutes per game, and 20 games to reach 600 Elo.

This means two hours of doing nothing just to be able to play balanced games.

It’s no wonder why beginners are discouraged from playing ranked.

This issue needs to be addressed by the developers, and Elo should be adjusted more quickly for new players.

Doing so would make the ranked scene more inviting and help the community to grow.

There is some concern that this would make smurfing easier, but it could mean fewer games played against professional smurfs for players with an Elo of 1000 or higher.

    This should be discussed further.

You could have the system assign elo based on How you played against AI.

Your 1st ranked ladder game is against

    1.

Hard AI, If you win->EXTREME AI where Win =1100, lose =900 and start your placement games. If you lose to Hard AI then,
    2.

Against Standard AI, Win-> start placement games at 700 Elo.if you lose->start placement games at 500 Elo.

These might be drastic elo drops, but It’ll cut down the wins/loses required.

Also, an easier method could be giving all the current accounts +200 elo.

This would mean that the new players still come in at 1000 elo but play against a current 800 elo.

New accounts already do gain/lose rating faster.

They could make it even faster I guess.

You have to realize though 1k is the average for new accounts.

So the vast majority are not 600 rating getting stomped taking 20+ games.

New players should start at 500 ELO.

You won you get insane amount of points.

If you’ve never played the game before or any rts this pretty close to where you’re at.

Losing 500 points is a lot of games.

If you win you jump 100s of points.

Until about 1k then you go like normal.

Joining the ranked ladder requires preparation, otherwise new players get stomped.

I think it’s brutal how they must endure so many losses to finding the initial placement.

I agree that it should fluctuate even more.

By preparation I mean they already must have some game knowledge and basic strategies and build orders sorted out.

Also it’s part of the RTS gaming.

It’s not that easy to jump in as rocket league or a multiplayer fps.

Is there anything wrong with people not playing ladder?

If they want to gain elo so badly they just have to improve and get better.

    Agreed.

As a new Xbox player, I’ve just avoided ranked for this reason, and have been having fun queuing up in unranked 1v1 quick matches.

I’m 4-1 so far in those.

Some games, when you queue for ranked games for the first time, put bots instead of real players against you to determine your skill.

Maybe playing the first few matches against the AI would be a good solution?

I don’t get all this fuss about ranked.

It works great and it doesn’t take long to fall into the elo you belong at.

I think more of the problem is people are incredibly impatient and can’t stand they might have to lose their first few games.

    No ranked system works perfectly.

Because it’s a solo game, not a team game, like most ranked systems we see, we can’t rely on the same formula.

    What’s the alternative?

Force new players into tutorials when they just want to play?

Force them to get a certain score in art of war before they can play?

Force them into games vs an AI, make you pick up bad habits that only work on bots?

Or 10x the already inflated elo loss/gain with your first games?

But would that really fix the issue?
