    Franks, Byzantines, Britons, mongols, goths.

Franks teach you scout rush + have a very forgiving economy.

Castles and 3 TC is easier and you can do it while making mistakes.

Scout rush has extra padding due to HP bonus.

Byzantines teach you defensive play and unit counters.

Also great on all maps, including hybrid maps.

    Britons teach you archer snowballing.

They are the easiest and most forgiving archer civ.

Mongols teach you all rush strats.

They can play scouts, archers, militia drush, tower rush, etc.

Their economy bonus is front-loaded as it only works in dark age with optimal play.

They teach you to get ahead and hold a lead because their mid game is awkward without a lead, their late game is OP.

Goths take all the guesswork out of late game.

Other civs have to make complicated choices in imperial age.

Goths just need conscription / perfusion / anarchy etc.

Make 10 barracks and spam infantry to win.

Easiest win condition in the game, the trouble is getting there.

    You know what?

I’ll be honest and say most of the civs are just fine for you to start with.

It’s not Sc2 or any other asymmetrical civ.

Easier to list civs that aren’t for new players, Huns because they have no houses, Chinese because 6 villager start, American civs like Mayans, Aztecs and Incas because they have no cavalry (though don’t let that fool you, they are scary).

To a lesser extend we can also add here Cumans because no stone walls and they get some buildings an age early and also Goths because no stone walls and because just Goths.

Civs that people will suggest as a start if you want to get serious would be any civ that doesn’t have a gimmick or a crutch that improves your early game.

    Why?

So you would first learn the basic way to start a match and be able to do it with any civ.

Prime example, Byzantines, no economy bonus or free techs to distract you.

Also a big bonus is that they are decent with any unit type, decent cavalry, decent archers, camels, decent navy, good unique unit etc.

Alternatively people will suggest some of the original civs because they are the most straightforward like Franks for cavalry or Britons for archers.

But I say screw being serious and just pick whatever you fancy.

Franks, Teutons, Bulgarians, Berbers, Lithuanians, Japanese, Tatars, Vikings, Slavs, Celts to name few civs that have either good cavalry and/or infantry (intentionally avoided DLC civs because you might not have them).

When you are ready to be a tryhard ranked player then look up build orders and study 1v1 tier lists made by pros.

Lithuanians have been one of my favourites. 150 extra food makes for a smooth dark age, also allows for some early scouts without damaging your move up to castle age too much, and the speed bonus for spears and skirmishers makes them a bit more usable.

Their late game trash units (no gold cost) are all very good with the winged hussar and the unique tech for spears and skirms, and the Leitis is a good unique cavalry unit.

Straightforward civ with a strong early start but nothing too ridiculous that may inhibit your learning of the game (Huns not needing houses for example is just teaching you to forget a basic part of the game).

Edit: forgot to add that your knights get attack bonuses after collecting relics (up to 4), this can make your knights very strong in castle ages if you can snag a few relics, and your monasteries work a bit faster.

Quite a simple civ really, work to get knights and monks out, get relics, bash the opponent with knights, and you have good late game trash units if need be.

Byzantines, no eco bonuses but gets everything and has a defensive play style.

The best designed civ probably since it relies heavily on making use of the counter units.

No eco bonuses is a good thing for starters, if you master it, making use of the eco oriented civs follows naturally(the other way round is hard).

    Franks is the easiest.

Basically everyone’s most placed Civ (or Huns or Clowns)

    Teutons is indie rock Franks.

Militia isn’t really a thing outside of Dark Age rush (drush) or Men at arms opening M@A.

Hindustani is maybe the best Civ at the moment.

No knights but you’ll quickly find it’s not a big deal.

I’m curious what people say here,

    I’ve been playing since Friday.

Not settled on anyone I really like yet, tho I do like how the Hun don’t need houses 😁

Franks are probably the most popular choice for beginners because their eco bonuses make the beginning of the game streamlined and easy to manage.

They also set up nicely to create lots of knights, which is probably the unit of choice for most new players.

But I think a civ like Byzantines is good to start out with if your goal is to get a feel for all the different options/units in the game without developing many bad habits.

They have no big eco bonuses, so you won’t grow accustomed to getting free farm upgrades like you would with Franks, for example.

Byzantines also have a fairly expansive tech tree, so you can play around with a bunch of different unit combinations to find out what the strengths and weaknesses of certain units and compositions are.

Some of their most notable bonuses (stronger buildings, cheaper camels/pikes/skirms, free Line of Sight upgrades) aren’t really crutches, so you won’t struggle as much when trying to branch out to different civs later on.

Other civs that would fit into that category would be Berbers, Magyars, and Saracens.

But each of them have more distinct early-game bonuses than Byzantines (Berbers have faster moving villagers.

    Magyars get free attack upgrades.

Saracen foot archers melt buildings, which can throw off your perception of archers/crossbows if you use them a lot).

Poles can also be a good civilization if your goal is the collect resources quickly and make a bunch of knights.

But they’re much more unique in the way you need to play them.

And if you want a civ that’s just fun to play with some wacky bonuses, I highly recommend Bulgarians.

They have a few bonuses that make them totally unlike other civs, but man is it fun to go for early man at arms and then drop kreposts all over the map.
