I am searching for custom maps that I can play with my friends, particularly maps where we can compete against each other. Does something like this exist? I have played many custom maps for Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 1/2, but never for Age of Empires 2. I would be thrilled to discover some hidden gems. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Plenty in the mods section. Most tournaments create map packs, so if you search map pack you should mind plenty.
I used to play with a group of friends at various skill levels. AoE is a brutal game where a small difference in skill can make a match almost impossible to win. We ended up making a bunch of custom maps that made the differences in our skill levels less decisive. In general, they are free-for-alls where you gang up on the person in the lead. They also tend to de-emphasize the economy, since that’s where the better players often got way ahead.
