MemberEver since I started playing this game (AoK), I had never ventured into the PvP side of it, despite playing many battle royale shooters. I was scared of being defeated and not having fun, believing that the number next to my character name would determine how much enjoyment I would get. However, I was wrong! I finally clicked the multiplayer button yesterday and gave it a go, and I had a great time, even in the games I lost. After completing my placement games, I realized that even if I had a slight losing percentage, I would still win some games. My initial 10 games were a 50/50 split, and I didn’t even know I could ban maps! Everyone on this sub has been incredibly helpful with their advice, and if anyone is in my shoes and is afraid to join the multiplayer queue, I would urge them to just do it!

GuestGG! Was in a similar situation two years ago when I finally played my first couple of ranked games. Fell all the way down to 500, fought my way up to 900 and currently try to aim for 1k 🙂 The community definitely helped.

GuestAt the risk of this sounding like a humble brag, I would like to share my situation. I have extreme ladder anxiety as well, but it’s because I’ve been playing the AI for so long and following along with the pro scene that my game knowledge far surpasses my ability to play the game. This means I know exactly what I’m doing wrong shortly after doing it, but I don’t quite have the skills to overcome the panic and make the correct decisions in realtime.
I’ve also been winning most of my placement games, which seems to increase anxiety rather than reduce it, because I know I’m quickly approaching an absolute stomping (and fear of failure is spooky). I’m only 1150ish, so nothing crazy, but I find a game against the extreme AI infinitely more chill than a game against a 900.
I’m glad to hear that others are overcoming their anxiety!! It gives me hope that I’ll eventually have the courage to play that 10th placement match after all this time! Happy gaming my dude!

GuestDefinitely had performance anxiety when I first started ladder play. As long as I don’t let myself get tilted thinking about winning/losing elo, playing humans is so much more fun and challenging than bots

GuestNice!
I think I mitigated a lot of ladder anxiety by finding out why I lost when I lose a few games.
When I first started I’d just go to the next game and not know what happened in the previous game.

GuestYou can counter castle drops by delaying your FC time and making 3 scouts instead of eco upgrades while going up. Most low elo players don’t add spears when castle dropping. The stone walls protect against feudal aggression but quickly fall to castle age aggression.
You can also make a few spears and pull 7 to 10 villagers to fight the forward vils if they bring spears.
Also making a second wall of houses or stone will buy you time to make counters like mangonel or monks.February 24, 2023 at 10:23 pm #15434depraved_onion
GuestI also kind of have recently. I just got bored stomping the AI and wasn’t excited by the thought of trying to do it in different maps/settings/2v1 etc. I also find the unranked lobbies to be so hit and miss and a waste of time for the most part.

GuestDon’t look at the elo number. It will be back again.
