For a mage class that can do AOE damage and explode enemies when they get close, the best strategy would be to use a Scout as your rogue unit.

The Scout’s ranged attacks and mobility make them well-suited for dealing damage from a distance and avoiding close-range combat.

Additionally, their ability to stealth and ambush enemies can be useful for surprise attacks.

I suppose maybe you could make an Aztec monk/ bogomil priest like character who fires chemistry mangonel balls with aoe damage?

I wouldn’t know how, but make its death animation an petard explosion and if possible, make it damage adjacent enemy units?
