I have always been intrigued by the fact that Bohemians, unlike other non-Indian/Mesoamerican civilizations, do not possess Cavalry Archers.
Could this be due to historical reasons or was it a matter of balancing the gameplay?
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23823ponunoGuestI think mostly civ diversity.
They lack ca but have access to castle age Hc’s.
And overall designed to have worst cavalry units among european civs
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23824Misteral_EditorialGuestYeah there’s historical reasoning.
1.
Unlike Lithuanians or Bulgarians, Bohemians don’t really have any steppe ancestry.
So flavour-wise, there isn’t any need for them to have CA.
2.
In comparison to its western kin like the Burgundians, Franks, and Teutons, Bohemia is the epitome of “medieval euro warfare was mostly infantry lined up in neat rows.” All of those civs also have terrible CA, it’s a minor difference to have not or to have terrible.
3.
Flavour-wise the Hussites are most well known for slow pushes with siege, infantry, and gunpowder, which is nicely captured in the Hussite Wagon unit, halb bonus, and food costing monks.
If there is one unit that is the antithesis of that playstyle, it would be a CA.
I think that might be why they’re fully missing them instead of just having no upgrades for them.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23825adquenGuestI assume it’s purely for balance, to not have chemistry CA in castle age.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23826dcdemirarslanGuesti mean Turks and Huns lack steppe lancers…wtf is that.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23827Sjonge11GuestPerhaps hiding HCA, who have a ton of HP, behind Hussite Wagons wasn’t deemed balanced in late Imp?
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23828TheBattlerGuestIt’s kind of a dumb exclusion.
In AoE2 logic, bows and crossbows are the same; alot of the European civs that have CA used Mounted Crossbowmen, including the Bohemians.
The civ is just wayyyy to focused on Hussite warfare.
They could have given them CAs, and their lack of techs would have made them crappy and unusable.
I remember in the leaks before Dawn of the Dukes’ release that the civ would have had Paladin but lacked Bloodlines, Husbandry, and Plate Barding like they do now.
That would have been an interesting way to show Bohemia’s traditional mode of war, chivalric cavalry, while also not really encouraging the player to go that route.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23829Tyrann01GuestProbably due to their focus on much more “pike & shotte” style tactics, which does not use cavalry archers.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23830mojito_sangriaGuestCuz they’re just not meant to make CAs
Actually CAs are only viable for those civs with a bonus or two on it, otherwise it’s straight up wasting lots of wood and gold.
I remember grinning over Alans’ Viking CAs in Attila 5 before DE
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23831Business_March_7936GuestCause we are not Mongoloids.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23832GMFPs_sweat_towelGuestSince the civ seems to be so modeled on the Hussites, I don’t think they would have used mounted archers.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23833Majorman_86GuestVikings have one of the worst Stables in the game and no Thumb Ring, but still have CA.
Franks lack Bracer and Thumb Ring, but have HCA.
But there is no CA for Bohemians.
I don’t think this is fine.
Even if they had CA, they would still suck ass.
So why not?
If we draw the line, 15+ civs have absolutely useless CA, but still have them on the tree.
March 27, 2023 at 3:44 pm #23834naslouchacGuestThe same reason why Bohemian civ lacks heavy cavalry or doesn’t have thumb ring.
Bohemians in game represents a really specific part of Bohemia history – more or less Hussite era.
Because honestly Bohemians were one of the most heavy cavalry, heavy infantry and crossbows civs.
Bohemians were already famous in early Medieval age for armoured riders and armoured horses as well, famous for very heavily armoured armies and being the second most prominent crossbow country right after Italy.
But you can pretty well simulate a more medieval Bohemians by playing Teutons.
Because this civilisation’s bonuses and techs represents more Early Bohemian kingdom well.
