I used to play Age of Empires 2 and its expansion, The Conquerors, a lot.
Recently, I got the Xbox version, and there are so many new civilizations to choose from!
I haven’t played in a while, so I’m not sure which ones are the best.
Could anyone provide a tier list?
I used to play a lot, so I’m mainly interested in online matches.
What are the top three civilizations and why?
It would be great to get some advice on strategies as I get back into AOE on Xbox.
Thanks!

February 7, 2023 at 3:54 pm #10132SchlabonmykobGuesthttps://youtu.be/nrzkRs56OjQ is the most recent tier list I can find quickly.
Hera also has some good guides on his channel.
February 7, 2023 at 3:54 pm #10133BurtusMaximusGuestTop 5 Arabia for new / average players
1.
Hindustani
2.Franks
3.Gurjaras
4.Mayans
5.Britons
Each other civs have very clear game plans supported by easy to use economies.
As economic develop is the main driver of this game its usually better to have a good and passive eco bonus over dominate units.
These civs tend to have both.
Gurjaras and Mayans have slightly different starts than standard but not too bad with a little practice.
New players tend to find Knight Civs much easier to mange than Xbow or CA civs.
Cav Archers and Xbow are micro intensive and if you’re not careful you can lose your mass real quick.
Top 5 Arena Civs
1.
Turks
2.Poles
3.Portuguese
4.Burgundians
5.Bohemians
DLC civs dominate the Arena Meta but Turks remain at the top.
Arena Civs tend to have Redemption Monks and Bombard Cannons and Good UUs.
Strong economies are even more important on Arena.
Top 5 Hybrid Civs
1.
Japanese
2.Lithuanians
3.Spanish
4.Malians
5.Huns
I would take this list with much more salt as I am lumping Nomad and Four Lakes into the same Category.
Spanish is far and away the best on Nomad but not a real Four Lakes pick.
Two Civs worth knowing about are Aztecs and Byzantines.
Both can be played on Open and Close maps.
Neither has any bad match ups.
Byzantines in particular can play any map against Civ.
Aztecs shine more on Arabia and Arena the two most common maps.
They could be considered top 5 on both those maps but also reasonable to leave them out.
February 7, 2023 at 3:54 pm #10134VelcomeToCinderGuestWell there are 42 civs and they are different depending if it is 1v1 or team game.
And add to that different map types like open maps, closed maps, water maps, hybrid maps (land and water), nomad start (start with no tc, 3 villagers spread across the map) and so on.
You might see why tier lists are not exactly practical.
But if you really want, stick with looking up 1v1 Arabia (open map), I’m sure top players have videos about it on their youtube channels.
Like the Hera one that got linked already.
Oh also, check out Spirit of The Law, he started recently a series that shows how much have original civs changed from Age of King until today.

Depending on the map of course, Gurjaras, Mayans or Chinese reign on Arabia, Bohemians, Turks and Burgundians rule Arena (Bengalis at the highest level), Spanish are the kings of Nomad, etc.
Lots of tierlists on top players’ channels (Viper, Hera, Tatoh…)
February 7, 2023 at 3:54 pm #10136PeterIanStakerGuestRM is balanced well enough that choosing the “best” or “worst” civ isn’t going to help or hurt you by very much.
It’s better to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and powerspikes of the difference civs, and how they match up against each other.

Although, if you’re a controller player, they might be the most stressful
