Recently I had a 4v4 game on Lombardia playing as the Mayans.
All of us had an elo rating of around 1200.
My pocket player was not very experienced, so it was mostly my Plumes and Halbs trying to fend off the Ethiopian Arbs and Frank Paladins.
I understand that without help from my pocket, I didn’t have much of a chance anyway, but I’m wondering which composition would have been best for me in that situation.
Elite Plumes can fight well against Arbs, but their attack of 5 (even when fully upgraded) is not enough to have an effect on Paladins.
Would it have been better to use Eagles and Halbs instead?
I know Plumes and Eagles are usually the go-to composition for Mayans if you can afford it, but would that change when you are facing a lot of Paladins?

But I wonder if you’d be better off going full halb in that situation.
I guess you’re just trying to die as slowly as possible.
If you can still move around the map though I’d probably include plumes and try to get behind the archers.
Interested to see other responses.

You always wanna keep your gold units alive.
This way you can thin out paladin numbers until opponent is out of res.
If your opponent has pure paladin and you’re fighting 1v1 within your tg you could go even full halbs in theory.

Vs paladins plumes wont really cut it.
In a halb eagle comp, eagles are mostly there to raid, snipe siege and deal with archers if there are any.
While halbs do most of the punching vs the cavalry and protecting ur own siege.

Would it not be better to go Eagles and halbs instead?
Unless your eagles can snipe the arbs, you need plumes here.
> I know Plumes and Eagles are considered the ideal comp for Mayans if you can afford it, but does that change when you’re up against mass paladins?
You will need halb for damage output vs paladins.
Halb also allows you to trade boom, double gold comp makes that very difficult.
> I’m wondering what my ideal composition was in that spot.
Probably halb plume eagle, in that order.
Halbs to hold the line vs paladin, plumes are efficient and deal with arbs if it’s a shootout, and eagles can raid or snipe arbs when they are out of position.
What really surprises me here is that neither opponent brought heavy siege as Mayans struggle vs siege.
Ethiopians even have Torsion Engines…
Paladin SO should wreck Mayans unless your pocket saves you.
Requires good micro from SOs to land shots and paladins to protect SOs without taking shots, though.

If you want to add some halbs due to insufficient gold income, that would work too.
