After playing 25 games online, I have a different perspective on playing Age of Empires 2 against bots. The strength of bots does not directly correlate with their Elo rating, as they have uneven playing styles. Bots excel at booming, but struggle in combat situations and early defense. However, their early rushes are impressive. I believe that if an Extreme bot played on the ladder against opponents ranging from 650-1000 Elo, it would end up around 850, especially if opponents were unaware they were playing a bot.

Starting at 1000 Elo is a mistake, as it takes around 30-50 games to reach that rating and a player with that Elo is much stronger than any bot. Playing against the AI does not prepare one for playing against opponents with a 900-1000 Elo. I found that at a rating of 600-700, I finally found players who shared my skill level, making games more fun and engaging.

Although playing in team games with players at 800 or higher can be challenging, I enjoy the experience and am glad I gave the game another try.

    > In other words playing the AI does not prepare you for playing 900-1000 Elo people.

It does, but you have to play the extreme AI.

It’s really interesting, the AI has gotten a lot better over the years and updates.

I am SO SO SO curious about where it would end up in ranked.

I wish I knew more about computers so I could simulate the AI over a long period of time and find out what its ELO actually is

Your point about the starting Elo rating of 1000 being too high for beginners is true. It can be discouraging for new players to lose so many games in a row and feel like they are not making progress. Starting at a lower Elo rating and gradually working up as they improve might be a better approach.

I’m glad to hear that you are having fun and finding some players at your level to play against. Keep at it and have fun!

The 950-1150 ELO range is an incredible mess. I get my ass kicked as well as I can kick ass. In recent times I feel like I encounter more and more evenly skilled people as I am. This is after playing 600 games and still it’s a mess. The differences in play level is often really big.

I used to be scared of ranked, so after playing against bots I started ranked and won 6 in a row, wich got me to 1250, than I slowly went back to 1150, nowadays I go between 1350-1400

I think it’s different for everyone and therefor it’s really hard to implement a better system

Extreme is 100% above 1000 elo.

There is no chance it would place under that.

I strongly agree that new players shouldn’t start at 1000 elo.

Extreme a.i. is much harder than a 1000 ELO opponent from my experience. If you can beat extreme, you should be around 1300-1500 ELO.

I have 900 ELO 1v1 and struggle against level below extreme A.I.

900 ELO 1v1 players struggle to even manage two TCs and a dock.

No need to apologize unless you are manipulating your elo in any way. Anyway I agree with your analysis in part, but not sure any 1000 elo player would beat the extreme AI tbh. It is as you said a very difficult opponent if you let them boom. Those with a more aggressive playstyle probably would.

I agree with the extreme elo being around 850-900. It was my aim to beat it consistantly before i started playing ranked. Placement matches do absolutely suck at 1000 elo you can find people with 1000 games or 10 games and its not fun when its just a team diff.

I am shocked right now. Are there really bots in rank games?

If you lower elo to 800 for new players sooner or later average elo will shift to 800. Players now 1000 will then be 800 and new player experiance wouldnt change at all.

I improved from 1000 to 1100 by praccing archer build order against extreme AI. But, yes, AI doesn’t play the same as a human. That’s expected.

The problem with starting people at lower Elo is that higher-ranked players got their ladder points by taking them off other players. If you adjust the settings so that new players start at 700, you’ll start to reduce the number of ladder points in circulation until a player who would have been able to stay at 1000 Elo can only get to 700, and new players will have the same problem again.
