MemberLearning AoE can be challenging, especially for beginners. The Chinese and Mayans are good civilizations to start with because of their extra villager at the beginning, although it may not necessarily help to reach the feudal age any faster. It’s normal to struggle against the AI on hard difficulty, even if you match their castle and imperial age times. Some tips for improvement could be to focus on efficient resource management, prioritize building an army, and strategically placing buildings. As for recommended civilizations for beginners, the Byzantines and Britons are good options due to their versatile infantry and ranged units respectively. Keep practicing and don’t give up!

GuestFranks easy to use because of food bonus, free farm bonus also their tech tree guides you straight to knights
Honestly Persians might be helpful too because you start out with more food and your tc works faster (tho can be difficult if you’re slow in villager production)
Aztecs gather more res from the start
Some would say just play a generic civ like byz so that you get used to not having certain bonuses

GuestBritons are best to learn feudal into archers.
Franks to learn and practise FC into castle/knights.
Goths reward you a good booming and post imp play.
Byzantines to play counter units.
And I’d add lithuanians to the list, you will focus on relics and they have a clear game plan, knight+monk/skirm

GuestChinese and maybe mayans are not the best civ to start with because of the extra villagers (more so chinese) it can be quite a tricky start and you can end up having so much town centre idle time that you end up not having the villager advantage.
I would suggest lithuanians are the best because of their extra food, it means less town centre idle time from queuing extra villagers. Alternatively the huns are a good one as you don’t need to worry about houses.

GuestFor beginners it is usually better to not start with chinese/mayans because of their different start.
But other than that, you can use any civ. Just be aware, if you use a single civ for learning and select a civ with an very stron eco bonus you could build bad habits. So keep that in mind 🙂
Oh, and just make sure you know the basic tech tree from your civ, so you know if you have better stable or range or… units 🙂
For hard AI, pressure them in feudal and finish them in castle age. Go for their eco so t they can’t mass. Try without cheesing the AI, otherwise it won’t be usefull in the long run.

GuestChinese is the hardest Civ to start with. Therefore I applaud your efforts. If you can learn Chinese every other Civ is going to be easy to pick up.
Here is a few build orders for Chinese. Build orders are a great place to start. You should think about why build orders work. If you take some time to practice and compare different build orders you love well on your way.
You will also need some basic unit knowledge.
The primary units are Knights, Eagles, and Archers. These are multi use gold units. Good in many situations and typically the back bone of your composition. You will want to compliment them at various stages of the game. And try to keep them alive.
Monks, Mangonels, Rams, Scorpions. These are complimentary units primarily seen in castle age. Monks counter Knights/Camel, and if you get redemption siege. They are good for healing units and picking up relics helping out your eco.
Mangonels, Scorpions, and Rams mostly counter range units. Rams are clunky and don’t get much use. Scorpions are less effective vs Xbows but are easier to manage. The are primarily used against Cav Archers. Mangos counter Xbows and Skirmishers.
Trash units rely on bonus damage. They don’t threaten. Villagers or the units they are not meant to counter all that much.

GuestMagyars imo are the best to learn with. No economic bonuses for you to lean on making you learn “proper’ eco-management which is the best thing to learn imo. They have fully upgraded archers, knights, and cav archers so you can play everything. Yes, they get melee upgrades for free and cheaper scout line, but lacking an eco bonus is the important part. Once you get a good feel for how a generic eco works, youll be able to adapt your build to civs with one.

GuestGo with Vietnamese. They are a very flexible civ, with a good balance of eco/early/mid and army bonus. They also don’t give you any crutches that train bad habits. Everything is basic, but either above or avarage.
Further, you see your oponents tc to not lose your scout.
Definitely my #1 beginner civ.
General tips are to start using and configuring hotkeys early and to use some of the excellent beginners guides.
Don’t try to “wing it” too early. Play by recipe until you feel comfortable with the game.
It’s like learning a sport. You don’t need to be creative or do something brilliant in your first two days. Don’t try to learn riding a bike by sitting backwards, you’ll be free to do a ton of cool shit later on.

GuestMagyars are great, good scout rush and no real early eco bonus to develop a crutch. Ethiopians is a great archer Civ to start with. I started with Sicilians and Vietnamese which definitely have some kinks.

GuestMagyars if you want to get good (all unit comps possible, no eco bonus to paper the cracks)
Franks/Britons if you want to brain dead
Huns if you want to build map awareness and speed
