One might assume that the Reddit community of a game would be smaller compared to the number of active players. However, it appears that the opposite is true. Is there something I’m not understanding?
This is a game from before “online gaming” was a thing, it’s not that surprising most people play it as a single player game. Who can blame them?! Campaigns are awesome and even in skirmishes AI is challenging
I quit when my SO quit. I used to play 1v1 but they didn’t.
1v1 RTS is a feeling like none other. If you win you get to celebrate at the end of a long and hard journey. If you lose it feels like you’re worthless, you wasted the time, and there’s nobody to blame but yourself. It’s also deeply personal unlike any other genre IMO.
All that to say that I think it’s to be expected that most people won’t bother clicking into a competitive 1v1 RTS game.
I am one of those people, I stared playing about 1.5 months ago and still can’t beat hard ai … so i just play with my friends against ai knowing that i won’t be ready for ranked any time soon
– inactive Reddit accounts
– some don’t play ranked
– some play only single player / vs AI
– some don’t even play aoe2, they only watch twitch
Imagine not just playing against AI with friends
A lot of us just play the game casually. I have a lot of friends who play AoE2, we grew up with it, but we just play COOP vs the AI.
I know this is one of the most friendly video game communities but I have no drive to play online vs other players.
I can’t be bothered to play ranked in ANY game at all. I lost my drive to be competitive, I just wanna have a good time with my friends.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed watching pro play even when I had little understanding. More of a spectator sport than it would seem at first.
isnt the 45K just the players who played in the past 2 weeks?
I like playing against bots to unwind, personally. I’m a dad who loved this game when I was in high school and joined the sub after the xbox release. When I game it’s to relax, and I’m sure there’s plenty more just like me making up a good chunk of the sub.
The team game pool is 75000 people according to https://ratings.aoe2.se/.
not really
I don’t really play the game at all. I just played Age of Kings as a kid, and then several years later, I got recommended a random video by this youtuber Spirit Of The Law. Since then I have basically watched all his content and joined this sub.
Still don’t play the game though.
It’s very easy for us sweaty ranked bois to forget that the *vast* majority of players only play single player/against AI, and even within the ranked players, the average elo is still 1050 elo. The 1300+ elo crowd is shockingly small
I’m a pure lurker; I have the game but don’t play it much, mostly just watch T90 and SOTL, and I also keep up to date with tournaments like Redbull Wololo
