Incompatibility

Yesterday, I enjoyed playing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition with a buddy of mine. However, when I attempted to join him in a multiplayer game today, I discovered that there had been an update. He is on Xbox with the ID 75350, while I am on Steam with the ID 73855, and I don’t appear to have the update. Is it possible that the two versions have become incompatible? If so, do you know when I will be able to get the update? Thank you for your help.
