Despite my nostalgia for Age of Empires 2, I have not been able to gain a victory in online matches.

I had hoped to have fun and feel challenged instead of being overwhelmed by my opponents, but I find myself unable to keep up with the rapid pace of the game.

I am usually able to reach the feudal age in a timely manner with a decent number of villagers, but then I am unable to keep up with my opponents and I end up being defeated.

I lack the confidence and skill to be able to turn the tables and overpower my opponents, so I find myself in a difficult situation.

How can I improve my game and gain the ability to win?

Sounds like you have no plan and no build order.

On Arabia start with the most basic Scouts into Knights.

Don’t see build orders as limiting your creativity.

See them as fundamental for dark age and feudal age eco management.

Feel completely free to add in more or less scouts / spears as you see it.

Hey dude, im not an expert but there must be something in your build order or execution that needs to improve or something else crucial.

I would highly suggest to look back on recordings and see what your opponent did differently then you and on what time stamp.

you can master just one build order and I’m sure you can get Wins.

I for example do a ton of research and sit on forums.

just consume knowledge as much as I can + play the game (not more then 3-5 ladder games at the time) then switch to campaigns and back to drawing board again.

this game takes a ton of knowledge and practice.

    its like a work experience.

you wont become manager right away.

just dissect your games and compare to your opponent actions and times.

I believe in you stranger 👊🏼🍻

Also, keep in mind that the ELO system is designed to eventually match you up against similarly skilled players.

Unfortunately, it can take awhile for new players to find their level, so my only advice is to just keep playing!

You should notice games getting more competitive around 20 games in.

Don’t be afraid to resign a little early sometimes if it looks like you’re going to lose or there’s a big score difference.

That way you save time and get even closer to your level!

What build orders, if any, are you using?

You say you’re getting hit “while massing an army”, but you shouldn’t really be “massing” an army in feudal, generally you should already have men at arms on the way to your enemy, or scouts or archers.

This is kinda what I was talking about in another thread.

The first 10-30 games online can really suck.

I’m in the middle of it as well.

I’d suggest trying team games if you haven’t already.

It’s a way to come up to speed without it all depending on you.

good news, that was all of us at some point.

Whats your favorite maps and civs?

Do you play teamgames or 1v1s?

Some strategies are going to work on some maps not on others like on arabia youd want to age up closer to that 20 number.

    scout openings kinda suck while you are ironing them out because it can be tough to;

age up while spending so much food on them

find damage while keeping your tc going

    decide how many to make.

not getting to fustrated with it and playing ranked games and watching youtube is going to be your best bet.

id love to answer any questions im a bit of a noob myself compared to many

Keep in mind that once you’ve played your 10 placement matches, the people you face are generally your same skill level.

So, if you struggle balancing defense/eco in the early game, an opponent who rushes early probably isn’t balancing what they’re doing at home very well—because they also are low elo.

That means that while they may have a tactical advantage, you might be ahead of them in other ways.

Along with the other suggestions here (especially build order stuff), watch some pro games and see how they’re able to use the back of their base and other areas of the map to push back against aggressive tactics.

Usually it’s not an immediate thing but something like holding off an invasion while you get your own forces and eco rolling.

    You can do this!

It just takes keeping a cool head and playing enough to the point that counters and “next steps” become intuitive

If you can consistently beat the extreme AI, you will be over 1k elo.

Start on that and then jump into ranked

Unpopular strategy: load up rank and just play sim city.

    No army.

    Let them kill you.

    Then, do it again.

And again, and again until you feel the strength in you as your opponents take longer to reach your walls, as you elo goes down.

    Then build back up.

I didn’t have time to go through the elo placement so I let my child play the first 20 games.

Now I’m a comfy 900 elo and it is a perfect 50/50 struggle
