Anonymous PlayerMemberFishing vessels should possess a meager level of attack capability to make them more realistic. Since villagers have the ability to defend themselves, the fishing crew should as well. This would also mimic real-life situations, where fishermen would fight back if their vessel is attacked, even if their efforts would be insignificant. However, it is not necessary for fishing boats to be an unbeatable force, but a group of ten ships should be able to deter fire ships. The positive response ofthe AoE2 community to an idea that may or may not have merit is admirable.

TeriyakisaucGuestI don’t think that is all too realistic, fishing ships had no reason to be armed with heavy artillery as far as I’m aware and whilst I’m not sure how it worked in medieval naval warfare ramming was a central part of classical warfare, fishing ships are in no way designed to be able to ram or in any way receive a ram. I just don’t see a situation where fishermen would be in any position to fight back.

armbarchrisGuestIn real life a fishing boat is “attacked” they’ll probably just say “yes sir you can indeed have my catch sir” hand over their food and pocket change and continue on not giving a shit about anything beyond their immediate survival. Why sink a fishing boat when you can leave them able to catch another fish for you to take tomorrow?

L0hasGuestthey could get a melee attack, and the animation is a vill sticking out a knife from time to time

CowUsual7706GuestI think this might be interesting on water maps like islands, where water play is inherently important. However, on hybrid maps like cross/four lakes this probably just discourages docking an enemy pond, as a single fire ship can no longer kill a whole fish economy, unless the attack of the ships is so negligible that the change does not matter in the first place.

lovehopemiseryGuestI don’t think this really makes any sense. How would a fishing ship damage any war ship? Fishing ships don’t have any weapons. What are they gonna do, throw a net over them?

socialistrobGuestI agree with this. It would also give players the option of some dark age rush on the water. Give them something like an attack of 2 or 3 and a range of 1. They could theoretically push around villagers getting shore fish and if they had sufficient numbers they could push back against a gally.

jdrawrGuestVillagers have all the tools they need for the various tasks, including the standard issue knive they all carry. A fishing ship wouldn’t have a reason to be carrying any weapons to fight off military ships.

OverlyReasonableGuestI disagree here.
If you commit to a bunch of fishing ships without protection you should be able to punished for that.

SimpatheticNSGuestDepending on how much attack they have it would completely change water meta and Japanese would be elite (not bad as is) bc those ships could tank and do whatever the damage is

UAForever21GuestI mean logically speaking for any ship with just people like say even the Titanic, it probably has zero defenses against another ship xD
But yes it should probably get its own attack and eventually Spanish Supremacy should affect it and you should be able to push with fishing ships and kill enemy fishing eco XD

vhisicGuestMaybe not to start with with but some tech upgrades from say castle age onwards At the very least for some naval civs it would make a ton of sense.
