Hey there, I used to play AOE2 when I was younger but it’s been about two decades since then.
I’m thinking about reinstalling it now.
I’m curious about how the game is played nowadays.
Is one versus one the most popular mode?
Is there a ranking system or anything like that?
Will I be paired up with players of similar skill levels if I download the game from Microsoft?
Could you please explain how that works?
Lastly, how long does a typical match usually last in this game nowadays?
I’m wondering about the duration of a game.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17474MtG-CrashGuest99.9% of the AoE2 people play AoE2:DE now.
Either 1v1 Ladder or the Teamgame Ladder (2v2, 3v3, 4v4).
Most common map is Arabia, followed by Arena, Nomad and in Teamgames Blackforest.
There are several ways to get it, I think the most common way is to buy it in Steam.
Make sure to buy AoE2:DE and not the AoE2:HD version.
The DLC’s are very good, but you can play the game without them and be totally fine.
Yes, you will find people on your level.
When you are new, the elo-system gives you about 10 games until it starts to rank you.
These 10 games are made for you to quickly find opponents on your level. 1000 elo is roughly the middle and its also where you start.
If you lose some, you will find weaker opponents.
If you win some, you will find stronger opponents.
You will always find people to play with, no matter your level and no matter the time of the day.
Rather quick games will end in mid- to late feudal age, which is about 15-20 in-games minutes into the game.
Rather long games last until 40-50 in-game minutes.
The in-game time goes 1.7x quicker than real-time though, so 40 in-game minutes are 40/1.7=23.5 reallife minutes.
I’d say 20 minutes per game is a solid estimation.
I personally always plan with 30 minutes per game and dont go on the ladder if I have lesser time 🙂
If you want more input, I can only suggest watching content creatores like Spirit of the Law, T90, TheViper and Hera.
And here you can watch through all the civs techtree without being in the game: [https://aoe2techtree.net/#Aztecs](https://aoe2techtree.net/#Aztecs)
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17475estDivisionChampsGuestMost games are like 25 minutes real time but age of empires time is 1.7 times faster so the game clock will tell you a 25 minute game latest 42 minutes.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17476TheConqueror753GuestI recommend getting AoE2 DE on Steam, the Steam version seems less buggy, most of the playerbase is on there, mods are better supported, and CaptureAge doesn’t work on the MS Store version (which is quite important if you want to be able to properly watch recorded games).
There is a ranked ladder, the team game one can be a bit of a mess unless you have a premade team, but the 1v1 ladder is pretty good.
It works on an elo system, so after the first 10-20 placement matches you should have reached your true elo, and will fight opponents with a roughly equal skill level.
The game length is varies greatly, but for most 1v1s I would estimate somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes, with 20-30 seeming to be the most common for open maps.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17477NieshtzeGuestAt low elo (which newcomers are very likely to be in), it takes around ~40 minutes of real time to finish a game.
And if you want to start off playing games that are actually evenly matched and you are a beginner, 10 matchmaking games are not sufficient.
You need a minimum of 20 games to reach an elo that will likely match your skill level (which would be around 600 elo most likely), so be prepared to invest at least 10-15 hours in the game to even START winning and playing good games.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17478Scoo_ByGuestBuy DE on steam.
There’s a ladder.
Highest elo is 2800+, lowest is somewhere in the range of 10-50.
Also, the games can last 10 mins, or 2 hours, or even [98 hours](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QNxDa35bNI&t)
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17479AlertBreath2887GuestAnywhere between 5 minutes and 24 hours
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17480BlockliesGuest20-30 mins, game time is faster than real time so 40 minute games are more like 20 or 25 mins.
Of course on a map like michi or black forest the games can last longer.
If you want faster games try all in strategies and empire wars or death match.
In empire wars you start with a blacksmith, barracks, miscellaneous unimportant buildings and in feudal age so expect fighting near the start of the game.
In deathmatch you start with ALOT of resources and whatever you regularly have but all your units are in their fully upgraded forms and you’re in imperial age with all techs available to you researched, even unique techs, expect instant conflict and games under 20 mins.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17481todjo929GuestWorth mentioning that in DE there are a couple of good tutorial levels (not campaigns), called art of war.
These will re-teach you the basics – dark age, feudal defence, feudal aggression, fast castle, and booming; along with a couple of more strategic/misc skills (large battles, naval battles, destroying a castle, formations).
I highly recommend you have a go at these to refresh yourself.
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17482wbcbane_GuestOver 70 hours.
*(I’m technically correct)*
March 4, 2023 at 10:52 pm #17483frozen_mercuryGuestGame is super alive right now. 1v1 is as popular as ever but team games are super easy to find as well.
Unless you are at the top of the ladder you will find games in less than a few minutes.
People are generally nice and the meta is not super stale.
Welcome back!!
