Saying you are top 99% isn’t the flex you think it is, think about it for a second

If you are around 1000 elo, you are good at the game.

apart from what the others said, remember that macro also costs apm.

people tend to associate fast play with micro, but for most parts of the game what eats up most of your apm *is* macro.

JonSlow/Terror has a similar APM and he’s what?

    Top 1% (2000+ ELO)?

So Elo/skill is really not consistent across games.

The difference in the sample population and the shape of the particular game’s curve make a huge difference.

As an example, I am not competitive at chess; I play a couple games here and there when bored, haven’t learned any openings since I was a kid.

I honestly think chess is kinda a boring game—but my ‘elo’ is around 1800. (app elo is way higher than tourney elo would be of course)

I love aoe2 and I try really hard and learn lots of openings and play way more than I play chess.

But my peak elo is 1350 (got there this week woo!)

1k elo after 180 games is really good.

I think a goal of 1500 elo is pretty arbitrary though.

Maybe you’ll hit 2k, who knows!!

but it’s not like chess where 1500 is ur average tom, dick and sally.

Now to answer your apm question; the very top of the ladder includes ‘low’ apm players, but they are both geniuses: Daut and Yo. (I think they are 40-60 apm.)

For what it is worth, my recent jump from struggling to get to 1200 to beating 1300s was no apm change but all making good decisions with army—primarily attacking efficiently:

When you can easily do damage—you must do damage.

When doing damage is like banging ur head into a wall (literally or figuratively) stop trying to do damage and beat your opponent another way.

TheViper made a fun series where he played with his left hand only.

I think it was called TheLefty.

When I saw him play against like 1200 ELO players he was so slow and I was 100% sure he must lose…

but he didn’t…I don’t think he lost a single game and just gave up the series because it was still hurting his hand.

IIRC he got to 1500 ELO.

That was really eye opening for me.

It’s not your APM you should be worried about.

EDIT: I mean he didn’t play with only his left hand, he switched to a left-handed playing style.

1k elo is pretty good for only 180 games.

You’d have to play ALOT more to learn everything as the game is pretty complex.

Being Diamond in LoL is an indicator that you can get alot better in Aoe as LoL is pretty hard too.

AoE is much less about APM than other RTS, simply due to the much wider tech tree.

Being effective with your APM and making the right decisions is a much more important part of the game.

Also, with 50 eAPM, you’re already quite fast, as the other comments already told you.

My best tipp I can always give to players like you who want to improve is to find yourself a consistent training partner around your level, someone with whom you play frequently and who can give you constructive critisism.

You should then drive each other to become better, and stop making frequent mistakes.

I also find that having a friend to play with on the regular, outside of the ladder, is a lot more fun, that’s why I’m not playing much ladder games lately.

Ladder Games are just the grind, you won’t get an outside view of your playstyle, though they ofc also help you get more consistent with your hotkeys/strategies.

Two pros – Daut & Yo, both 2k4+, average 60 eapm.

CaptureAge uses eAPM btw, so the number is naturally lower than APM

    apm isn’t your issue.

There are 1800 players with 30-40 effective apm. 50 effective apm is perfectly fine, no worries.

Just focus on your macro, your build orders and on what you pay atttention to during the game.

It can be a long road though: For 1500 ELO it took me around 1.7k games (1v1, TG and training with friends combined), with a coach or being less stupid it might go faster.

    I’m a 1600 and my apm is 30-35.
