I’ve been playing Age of Empires II for the past three days and I’m still playing against the AI at the hard difficulty level.

What do you think is the best way for me to improve my skills?

Should I challenge myself by playing against other players in ranked matches, even if I get crushed at first?

I’m open to any suggestions you might have.

Cicero’s build order scenarios (available as a mod) are really helpful for practicing build orders.

Just don’t be discouraged when you get an F every time as the grading scale is pretty strict.

Aside from that, the first tips for any new player:

    KEEP THE TOWN CENTER WORKING.

    KEEP YOUR VILLAGERS WORKING.

If you have extra buttons on your mouse, one of them should select an idle villager.

If you see that any are idle (top of your screen) use it to quickly get them working on something.

    SPEND YOUR RESOURCES.

If you have a thousand wood, build farms somewhere.

If you have thousands of anything else, get more units or upgrade what you have.

If you’re beating the Hard AI, then you should definitely be able to find competitive games on the Ranked ladder.

Just know that you’ll lose a few games while your Elo drops to your “correct” level, so don’t be discouraged.

    Welcome!

    Have fun!

    Practice.

You aren’t going to be great 3 days in and ranked is one of the best ways to practice.

If it’s torture to play then the game isn’t for you because it should be fun.

Watch (and practice) [Hera](https://www.youtube.com/c/heraageofempires2)’s road to 2k tutorial.

    Super insightful.

    Play ranked.

Rewatch your loses using capture age.

    Watch pros playing.

    yes start ranked imo.

you will lose a few placement games then settle at a elo with similarly skilled players

Unfortunately, that’s how it is, in every competitive game.

Get beaten badly, train, and improve.

    No shortcuts.

If that feels torture, don’t play.

Don’t play if you don’t enjoy playing.

I recommend you download Capture Age and use it to watch your replays.

Try to see what works well and what doesn’t, plus capture age is great for highlighting important statistics like TC idle time and worker efficiency.

Aoe2 is tricky because you often have to look away from the action to take care of other tasks.

But it’s very fun and rewarding.

If you’re winning against hard AI sometimes then you’re off to a great start!

    Nah you’ll get better.

The thing is, how much effort are you willing to put in to get better?

I suggest you watch the pros play (they’re all linked on the subreddit sidebar), even if you can’t mirror their inputs 1:1 yet, you can atleast get a general idea of how to play.

Play the quick match option it’s un ranked and a good step up from playing the AI
Watch heaps of T90 and other streamers, this game takes a lot of homework to get good at that’s why it’s so addictive and enjoyable

I’ve played like 1 month against extreme AI before getting into the ranked ladder, and I started at 1k elo before the first ten matches.

But that’s because I was very unconfident about my skills, and I didn’t want to loose my first 10 matches (It ended 7-3).

But at this point, I know that you’ll always going to reach 50% of winrate, so you have to become familiar with both wins and defeats.

I found learning a few easier aggressive build orders (scout and archer rush from Heras Discord) against the AI very helpful.

Then you have a clear (and not too long or complicated) game plan (“defeat the opponent in feudal age”).

This of course won’t work all the time and when it doesn’t, you learn to adapt (and learn late game).

But having a clear plan for the early game was the first thing I have learned and I found it a helpful first step to build upon.

    Jump straight into ranked games.

You will play against equally skilled players after the initial placement games.

It is much more fun and they can punish your mistakes much easier then the AI can do.

    Tips for improving:
    1.

    Dont have idle TC time.

    Always produce vills.
    2.

Have some strategies prepared to execute in different situations.
    3.

Gather the right amount of every resource at a given time.

    Dont have much resources floating.
    4.

Try to learn some build orders to execute above ook te more effectively.

If you are beating hard you are not bad.

In any case regardless of your level you can still play ranked because the system will pit you against people of your same rating (you may lose the first few matches).

Playing against humans is more satisfying that against the machine, but also more stressful and it gives some people anxiety.

    To each their own.

    Play what you want!

But yes, you learn more playing against humans than against machines.
